I've been experimenting with being full electric for almost three years now ?. So far, highly successful.

I'm just not a hybrid/PHEV candidate. However, I much prefer non-BEV drivers to be in hybrids or PHEVs. That way I'm not inhaling fumes as I walk past idling cars in the parking lot at the grocery store. Hate that vehemently.

Hey, your tailpipe stinks! Turn off your GD car!

You clearly haven’t been paying attention to Toyota‘s sales of hybrid vehicles over the past 7 or 8 years. They’ve been steadily increasing year over year, even when there is a gas-only model within the lineup. Hybrid-only versions of the Sienna and Venza hasn’t hurt their overall sales. Toyota is a very conservative company. If they didn’t think people would embrace hybrid-only versions of their popular models, they wouldn’t have done it.

Toyota’s hybrid system is pretty bullet proof these days. They’ve had more than 25 years to prove their reliability and refine the technology. Plus the fact that Toyota is also putting their hybrid tech into their trucks, not just their SUVs. And it’s not like a bunch other manufacturers haven’t embraced hybrid technology as well. Ford has been doing hybrid trucks& SUVs for a while, too.
I have paid attention. That’s why I looked up the RAV4 sales numbers before posting.

The gas version is the most popular trim line on their most popular model.

And they’re killing it.

How is that not risky?

That would be like Ford killing off the gas powered F150 and going hybrid and EV only.

There’s no chance Toyota is going to see a 20% drop in sales.
We shall see! Your prediction is locked in! ?

I think they may be able to hold sales numbers year 1 (there’s usually a bump with a new model) but it’ll be hard to match those 475,000 sales/yr they currently see with less trim selection and a higher price.

I think 20% less is definitely possible. Maybe even more.

Are you suggesting that they are eliminating trims? From the press release it seems like they are adding more trims.

The gas powered ones. I would consider that to be a trim. And the gas ones currently are about half of sales.
From the Toyota website:

“
Build Your 2025 RAV4
The 2025 Toyota RAV4 has 11 trims available: LE, XLE, Hybrid LE, XLE Premium, Hybrid XLE, Hybrid SE, Hybrid Woodland Edition, Hybrid XLE Premium, Limited, Hybrid XSE and Hybrid Limited. Select a trim to begin your build.”

More hybrid sales means more federal tax revenue. Welcome to the club. Now we just need a federally mandated tax for all auto carbon emissions. Fair is fair right. If you pollute, you must contribute. The bigger the displacement, the higher the tax.

How does more hybrid sales mean more federal tax revenue?

Interesting way to look at it. IMO. No more hybrid tax credits and 100 tax for hybrids is more revenue. But what do I know. I was never any good at word problems. I linked the bill so people can come to their own conclusions.

Sure, but this has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

Toyota is getting rid of the gas powered RAV4 and going hybrid only.

That bill won’t equal more tax revenue because of Toyotas decision, it will be exactly the same.

Now if the bill didn’t repeal the tax credits, Toyota going all hybrid would equal less tax revenue.

Either way, bill or no bill, you said, “More hybrid sales means more federal tax revenue,” but it isn’t true.

It's more revenue for the government because most EV/PHEV/HEV owners will have to drive a LOT more than they usually do to pay for the same amount of gas tax if they were driving a regular ICE.

It’ll be an interesting but possibly very risky business move for Toyota.

The RAV4 is their #1 selling vehicle by a large margin.

And about half the RAV4 sales are gas powered.

They are replacing a likely very nice profit margin and huge seller with a full EV that’ll likely cost more and lose money.

Oh, and it’s an EV in the most competitive slot in the EV market right now- the small to midsize crossover.

Bottom line- do I think they’ll replace the profit from the 230,000 or so gas powered RAV4s they sell currently per year with a full EV model? Nope. Especially since they only sold 18,000 Toyota BZ4X last year.
Toyota, once again, plans more logically than the other manufacturers. I love my Mach e, but would prefer a RAV 4 PHEV (two year wait for them when I got my Mach E). For the amount of battery in a Mach E, one can build 4-5 PHEVs. 5 vehicles going 80-90 % of miles on electric power saves way more gas than 1 vehicle going 100%

One of my friends had the first version of the Volt, only about 40(?) miles of electric range and he was in real-estate and drove a lot. He bought well under 10 gallons of gas a month.
