How reliable is adaptive cruise control?

There have been several incidents where the ACC has nearly got me in an accident. It usually happens when there is an obstacles appearing on the left, it just seems like it won't detect it. For example when I change to the left lane and there is a car there, it doesn't even slow down even though I would have done it already, so I take over. There was another time where the road curved to the right and the car seemed like it was going to head straight into the barrier. Do I just have high expectations for what it can do or should I take it in to get looked at?

It’s very reliable, but only sees what’s right in front of it.

You have to remember this (and blue cruise and autopilot and any level 2 system) is a drivers AID.

It makes your life easier, but it’s not meant to replace you.

If you see cars up ahead braking……. Hit the brakes. Don’t wait for the car to react to the car right in front of you.

Same goes for obstacles in the road, curves coming up, someone about to cut you off etc.

And yes, in the case of lane changes, you should determine the speed based on what you see, not wait for the car to reset distance and speed based on what’s in the next lane over.

Adaptive cruise doesn't steer for you, so I don't understand "the car seemed like it was going to head straight into the barrier". It just senses the car in front of you and matches their speed, keeping a specified distance.

It does steer. It detects lanes and tries to center you. It just doesn't allow you to be hands free like Blue Cruise

I guess I have been using it wrong then. I feel like I'm doing more work anticipating what to correct

You’re using two separate systems- adaptive cruise and lane keep assist.

Yes, you should always be doing work in conjunction with both. Neither drive for you, but I have found it’s way more relaxing to use them.

That said, they’re both best for the “boring” parts of a drive. Long straight roads cruising at the same speed with normal traffic.

For more “advanced” driving….. I drive.

Lane keep "assist" isn't intended to be used as a substitute for Blue Cruise or a higher level of autonomous driving. If you get into an accident it would be your fault for not driving the vehicle.

How valid is this post? I question the validity of the issue and the poster.

The label on the tin is driver assist not driver replacement ?

We should never allow ourselves to get into situation where “we”’not the car gets us even near to an accident.

My experiance with adaptive cruise control is that it works very well 98% of the time. It copes with stop go traffic very well. Combined with lane centering the car nearly drives itself on motorways. Very impressed. I just wish it had a resume button after braking manually, instead of having to reset the speed. Much better than my 2018 V8 GT which dropped adaptive cruise below 30kph.

It works pretty well for me but I don't rely on it to adjust correctly when changing lanes nor do I expect it to fully steer for me. It does lane center but I am "soft steering". Occasionally there will be problems like it drops doing lane center and I don't notice.

The worst is, where I drive (California) motorcycle lane splitting is allowed. Two times now my car has followed the distance of the motorcycle as it passes the car in front of me (so I speed towards the car in front). I'm not sure if it will ultimately hit but it is hair raising.

I now use the "OK" to temporarily stop when changing lanes or I can see traffic is slowing far ahead.

During my commute, I actually now will prefer freeway driving even if it is a little slower since I can put ACC on in stop and go traffic.
