Yeah it’s steep as hell here. My ‘23 registration is $660 and I have a ‘09 Aston which is $1000. I miss NM where registration was $45 IIRC.

In Virginia, you can get an OBD and DMV only charges you by the mile. There is no exorbitant upfront fee. That is the ONLY perk VA has for EVs - no rebates, HOV lane access… nothing. https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/taxes-fees/mileage-choice

But if I recall correctly the CA EV charge is only around $100. The rest is based on car's value? We used to have ad valorem tax in GA and you'd pay a hefty chunk every year you owned the car and the tax didn't decrease anywhere approaching the decrease in value of the vehicle.

They voted it out some years ago, we do have a $214 ev fee which is on the higher end of most states EV taxes.

$100 annual road improvement fee for the registration of every zero-emission motor vehicle model year 2020 and later. (2020 only) Up to $175 (indexed) annual road improvement fee for the registration of every zero-emission motor vehicle model year 2020 and later. The fee shall be increased in an amount equal to the increase in the California Consumer Price Index for the prior year. (2021 and subsequent years)

A zero-emission vehicle produces no emissions of pollutants, toxic air contaminants or greenhouse gases when stationary or operating, as determined by the state Air

and this lists how the annual fee for all cars is taxed. it's based on 0.65% of cars value

It is really pointless to compare annual auto registration costs across states when not also taking into account all the other tax differences between states.

But I guess it is fun?

Georgia has an Alternative Fuel Vehicle Annual License Fee that adjusts each year. In 2016, the first year of the fee it was $204.20. The most recent is $219.84 but a new amount is due to be calculated and effective July 1st 2025 to June 30th 2026.

I feel like it is a fair compromise since I don't pay the typical road taxes since I don't buy gas.
