You must not have school zone speed limit signs or construction zone signs where you live.

No way for the car to understand a 20 mph school zone or 50 mph construction zone “when flashing” sign.

For the OP, the BLIS indicator could just be a dirty sensor. How clean is your car?
No issues in reading school zone signs that I have noticed, but then again, I’m not using BC in school zones, who would???
I don’t recall using BC in a construction zone either.

I know that speed sign recognition has been a pain for many Mach e owners (that comment about it here) I have my Mach e turned off because my 2021 F150 and wife's 2023 Escape work flawlessly and I can't take the chance of an accident.

With my 2023.5 Mach e I can't take the chance of sudden deceleration to 25mph in a 35mph rural road with a tailgater behind me. We are going to end up in the ditch sooner or later...

Also the software seems to think that a 65mph Blue Cruise enabled interstate is 55mph when entering the highway. I get on and set the cruise to 70mph. First 65mph sign it sees creates a sudden deceleration to 65 in heavy traffic. I got good insurance but I don't want to test it. So the speed recognition stays off. JUST SO YOU KNOW in the F-150, Escape and the Mach e Ford predict the speed limit without physically seeing a sign. You would think that a major Clue Cruise enabled interstate would have the speed limit in the database.

We have areas on the interstate that have been under construction for a long time around here, but the lowered speed limit is only when flashing, likely workers present situation.

But it was just an example of how the cameras can even read things “correctly” but be completely wrong.

Our county also just added “speed cameras” for school zones (but only while flashing), I actually use cruise control to make sure to stay below the limits. Kinda convenient since you hit just 1 button on the steering wheel.

Either way, I hated the car automatically changing speeds based on speed sign recognition tolerances…. Even when it read signs correctly. The rare times it reads them wrong can be dangerous as the OP found out.

I generally keep my car clean. Either hand wash or use a touch-less auto wash once a week.

I figured that to be the case. Sounds similar to how most, if not all, GPS devices and apps have the speed limits baked in.

That begs the question - if the car knows the posted speed limit based on GPS, does the camera override that database when it "sees" what is perceived as a different speed? If that's true, then I suppose it makes sense for it to do that in situations like work zones where the posted speed limit may be temporary lowered.
That seems to be how it works.

I think the default is what it sees and that overrides any GPS data.

My wife’s BMW i4 has a cool feature that I wish all cars had. There is speed limiter button next to the cruise buttons. I limits the top speed to whatever it was when it was pressed. Normal throttle applications keeps the car at the set speed, but you can break through with a firmer push for emergencies.

The construction thing. Is the flashing speed limiter sign in the shape of a speed limit sign?

We have variable limit highways, one digital sign overhead for each lane. Seems to pick that up ok.

Found the culprit!

Tonight, on my drive home, I paid close attention to when my speed limit icon changed from 45 to 60. It was exactly as I passed this road sign! Well, not this exact sign, but the same sign a few miles back down the road. This one is closer to my house and right before a stop sign.

It's funny that the same road sign doesn't seem to trigger the speed limit change during daylight hours. Wonder if it has something to do with the headlight reflection.?

I turned off school zone speed limit almost immediately. That was a setting buried in the Nav app. When it was on, the car would set to 20mph no matter the time of day. I typically plan my commute to avoid active school zones, so it was really annoying. For the most part, it ingores school zones now, but not always.

I have a similar situation but mine is a county road 50 sign which inevitably decelerates my car from the posted 65 mph (+ 5 mph, so 70) to 55. After I figured out the cause I remember where the problem stretch of road is so I am ready to override the computer.

I turned off "Predictive Speed Assist" in the vehicles driver assist settings to prevent this from happening.

So, just to confirm, there’s currently no way to leave on speed sign recognition while turning off the curve speed reduction?
