Accelerator Pedal Scare

Hello to all the forum members. I just joined recently but have been reading the posts for some time. I have 2023 MME Premium. I had a strange problem that came up about a month ago. I had just turned the corner making a right turn from one street to the next and started to accelerate to 35 MPH. All of a sudden, the accelerator pedal felt loose (no resistance) and the vehicle started to decelerate. I took my foot off the pedal and started to push it a little but after 5 seconds in became loose again and the vehicle started decelerating again. I let up on the pedal and began to push a it a little it worked normally. It hasn’t happened since then.

I don’t know if accident mitigation kicked in. There was no traffic or the threat of a collision but it was 2 lanes merging into one. I haven’t looked into the wiring diagrams yet, but I wonder if the software also has control of the pedal. If it does, I think the 2 lanes going into one might have confused the computer and it thought there was going to be a collision.

Has anyone had this happen to them?

My car is completely off right now and the accelerator pedal has just as much resistance as it normally would while driving. I don't think the car has any way to adjust the feel or resistance of the accelerator pedal. I don't know for sure but I would be willing to bet that you have some kind of hardware malfunction with the pedal.

Please check for any floor mats that may have gotten in the way.

You should not use floor mats unless they have anchor points so they can't possibly slide forward.

Any chance you hit resume on cruise control when you were turning the wheel. I have had a couple of instances of unexpected acceleration when I meant to hit set (at 35) but accidentally hit resume and started launching into highway speeds.

This has happened to me several times.
I read a post that said it was possible that in turning you hit the speed control button. That would be a good explanation. Since then, I have been careful to stay away from that button and I have had no occurances since.

Well, I finally got around to investigating the failure mechanism. The only thing that could have happened is that the assembly (either one or both tabs) was not fully engaged in the retainer. There is one on both sides. This is what would cause the spring to relax and make the pedal feel loose. The deceleration was caused by the elements losing alignment. The connector and electronics are one assembly. The rotor aligns with the electronics to set the accelerator pedal position (APP) and send the data to the PCM. It appears to be a capacitance device. The schematic shows it as 2 variable resistors (no doubt for simplicity). There are 2 of them in the assembly with 6 connections. It is possible that the third press on the pedal may have caused the assembly to seat properly. Testament to why it never showed up again and when removed and inspected, it was in the retainer.
