If you can find a used one, I highly recommend the Honda Clarity. I had one for four years, it was never in the shop. It has its quirks, but it's the best car I'd ever owned until I got my MME.

One caution. Our mechanic told me that a customer with a PHEV - a Bolt - was able to drive exclusively using battery. Never took long trips so never used to engine. Long enough that the gas began to form varnish in the injectors. Lesson: Use the engine more than once every 6 months. ;)

That's my wife's car - she loves her Clarity PHEV.

Her next vehicle she is eyeing is the BMW 45e PHEV.

I also have a 21 Escape PHEV.

IF you don't need AWD, it is a great option. I get 45-49mi of EV range in the summer, ~37 in the winter. Spent just over $30k for it including tax incentives.

I see lots of people mentioning the RAV4 Prime. It is a good vehicle, but prices are irrational - you will spend more on the premium for one than you will ever save in gas.

My advice - get an eCVT if you are buying a PHEV, whatever you get. This is what Ford, Toyota, and maybe a couple others use.

Modern PHEVs have logics to start the engine occasionally for this and other reasons.

If a mechanic told you that anyone should run the gas engine in a Bolt, you need to find a new mechanic ASAP.

Hey everyone. Looking for some advice. Have had a 21 Premium awd extended range for 18 months and have loved it. But now have a need to drive from Iowa to Colorado on a fairly regular basis and am considering changing to a PHEV that will let me use electric only most days for commuting to work but make the trips to Colorado faster.

Any suggestions?

Have looked at the Grand Cherokee 4xe and like it (especially considering mountain driving in Colorado) but would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!
Two enthusiastic thumbs up on the 4xe. Bought a 22, loved it. I don't like the short range for full EV, but other than that, it is a luxury vehicle although maybe not advertised as such. And it is great for mountain driving. Sorry, I can't really compare to similar vehicles, never owned anything else in that class.

If you want full electric, you are in the right forum. We traded our 4xe for an MME, sorta miss the 4xe but love the MME and zero gasoline.

2023 Escape PHEV are available with AWD but you can’t order a new one until September, 2024 by then? I thought they did qualify for the $7500.

My daughter has a Prius prime and loves it. If it's like my standard Prius was, it should be very reliable. Probably no tax incentives though since it isn't made in North America.

A nice used one might make sense, depending on your commute distance. I think the 23 version has 50% more range than previous years.

Prior to our MME we had a Prius Prime. For almost all our driving around town we were able to accomplish it on electric only. Got close to 30 miles range in warm weather and just under 25 in winter. Would have preferred closer to 50 mile range. My best range usage was 1,400 miles on 8 gallons of gas plus some amount of electrons. On long trips I would typically get about 50 mpg.
