Android Auto Issue - what am I missing?

Recently I started having a small but very annoying issue with Android Auto in the Mach-e.

It used to be I could look up directions on Google Maps and start the directions, so that when I turned on the car AA would connect and the directions would be already entered and underway.

Now, if I start the directions on my phone, when I start the car and AA connects it terminates the navigation and goes back to asking me to enter a destination. Its very annoying because, especially with some lag, I end up needing to wait to start driving while everything connects and comes up instead of getting going and then having the navigation underway in a couple of minutes once AA connects.

Anyone have ideas of why this may be happening suddenly when previously it worked fine?

Mine still works fine. Check that the directions on Google Maps are for driving, not transit or walking.

it has started happening to me too. i used to do the same exact thing as you.

it doesn't ALWAYS not work, but it definitely frequently doesn't work anymore. i haven't figured out the pattern. i had thought at first i just forgot to press "start" but have already realized before your post it's a bug of some kind.

Galaxy S23 and yup, happens to me too. I had been using Waze exclusively (this doesn't happen with Waze) but changed over because of the SoC connection in Maps.

As to the why? Two words: Google and Ford (okay so that was like three words). Google can't leave well enough alone and loves to fix what isn't broken thereby breaking things. Ford is solidly in the "not a software company" column.

Happy with my car for almost three years now but I have never liked the software experience.

This happened to me yesterday (s23 ultra), but has worked in previous days fine. So seems consistent with the other replies, being an intermittent issue.

This. What you can rely on is Google making slight but often annoying tweaks, usually when you just want things to work as they always have .

I've noticed a lag in searching for net new destinations and retrieving my saved locations of late. It's not been as impactful as what you're stating - yet.

Yeah unfortunately for me it's not intermittent it's every time.
