Any way to force native Nav map update (roads only) without Connected Services ?

yes, I am growing used to the AndroidAuto display... Still pissed off that @Ford Motor Company holds Navigation hostage for connected services subscription.

only downside is it takes a little bit for AA to connect when I start the car, and keeps telling me I have to unlock my phone before it can connect.

Must be a setting somewhere, but I haven't taken time to look.

the short answer for now is "no map updates without connected services subscription"

Unfortunately no updates without subscription, the new maps are released only with OTA updates. But here in EU many of us in different countries got a message from Ford that the Ford Connected Navigation is now free and without expiration date. I don't know if anyone in US got the same message.

Don't forget EU models get front tow hook rear tow rating.

That could be a phone setting. On my Pixel, the "Extend Unlock" setting allows me to choose trusted devices that the phone will stay unlock when connected to. I've added cars and earbuds as example.
