the only thing I want updates on is road data, or phone screen cast to big screen
you do realize you can use Apple CarPlay and Apple (or Google, or MapQuest, or whatever) Maps? In fact, navigation with Apple Maps is integrated.

I can’t speak to android, but I think there are other android users around. I have never subscribed to premium connected services, but I do have a BlueCruise and navigation subscription. I’ve never had any issues.

thats my point.... I do not have blue cruise or connected services subscription.

Q1: can I update road data layer in native Nav WITHOUT subscription ?

You can 99.9999999% most likely use Android Auto without any subscription as you are the only user who has claimed you can’t….and if it required a paid subscription, people would be raging. Especially given Apple knowingly does not.

You need to figure out why it didn’t connect/how to get Android Auto to work and you will have exactly what you want.

It is free, Android Auto is your solution.

Outside of that, no you are not going to get updated native navigation for free.

ok, then I guess I need a step-by-step on setting up AA. I am afraid that past efforts to disable when I was using native Nav have left some setting somewhere in the car or my phone in a bad state.

Is there a 'setting up your car&phone for AA' cheat sheet anywhere ? I'm glad to give it a try.

I’d probably start at 10:40 on this video:

or 5:20 on

Not sure how old your sync is as it’s sounds like you also stopped letting the car update at some point.

There are SO many options for the Sync4 car owner, when it comes to choosing what connected services are desired, as well as the data-sharing options that can be enabled/disabled.

The shear number of possible combinations of what is subscribed to, what is native, and what the driver has enabled/disabled.... is daunting.

I err on the side of everything ON and enjoying it all without fret. I'm reckless that way in my old age. Time is running out and I don't want to miss my last chances to play with the new stuff. :)

Having said that, I can't help but notice that the OP disabled updates, but at the same time desires updated software. Seems like a dichotomy right out of the gate.

The simple answer is no, if you don't pay for connected navigation, you won't get updated maps.

Ford has always charged for map updates on their navigation offerings. This is nothing new. There were hacks to update it manually for sync3, but I doubt we see that for sync4.

Ford isn't going to give you something for free that they have to pay for.

Android Auto DOES work if you don't have connected services.

I don't trust @Ford Motor Company software updates, they include more bugs than features from what I have seen so far.

All I want is road data.... quite different than software updates and not a dichotomy at all.

Thanks for this, I will attempt to reset AA and see if I can get fresh map data thru my phone.

I am at Powerup 4.3.4, and turned off auto-updates right after I got my HVBJB replaced. I don't use BlueCruise, and seldom DCFC, so none of the updates offered enhancements I was willing to try because I do not want to introduce the bugs that a sloppy release policy can/has introduce.

Depends on if map data relies on, or is tied to, an over the air update of some kind.

Many of these features are intertwined. The GWM, APIM, and TCM are an ensemble and together are continuously tweaked in order to maintain "connected" harmony.

I do understand the challenges of development and release of complex software believe me, I spent 20 years doing exactly that. From what I have seen Ford has a long way to go to refine their development and release process to a point I will trust it

I believe you have to be subscribed to connected navigation. I’m out of the country right now and Ford is blocking access so I can’t confirm.

the short answer for now is "no map updates without connected services subscription".... which I think is unreasonable.

I've switched to using AndroidAuto Navigation
