I don't know, I haven't gotten any updates in a long time. maps change pretty often. plain map data layer should update outside of regular OTA stuff don't ya think?

Well I'm pretty sure all the map updates show up with gateway updates. That doesn't mean they'll let you use the maps if you didn't subscribe...I guess...I really don't know about that one cause I haven't gotten there yet.

Does your Sync map info show an expiration date or does it show the part number type format? Cause they did a change about 6 months ago and if you do have the latest gateway update it should show a part number and not an expiration date.

I've updated my Sync 3 maps on my Focus RS for free annually using these guys:

They don't seem to have anything for Sync 4, but they might come up with something in the future as more subscriptions expire and the maps become outdated. I know we can update the Sync 4 software via USB (FDRS uses this method), so I'd assume it's technically possible to perform a map update via USB as well.

Given that nothing about connected services (I assume you mean premium), which I am willing to bet many users are not paying for is listed as a requirement for Android auto, I’m going to go out on a limb and say this is probably user error or there would be a lot more post complaining.

I dunno. I'd give AA navigation a try, but AA 'fails to connect'. I am not an AA person, so I may be doing something wrong; I had it disabled on my phone since I never used it. I enabled and updated AA, and it tries to connect, but fails.

so.... the feedback to @Ford Motor Company is that the base layer of Navigation.... from google or wherever they get them *should* be fetched fresh with every use... just like the maps on a phone.

If they want to add Ford-specific layers for Blue Oval chargers, live road conditions, etc... then maybe consider a subscription cost, but I'd want to be able to 'pull' a map update when I wanted to make it worthwhile.

Sad truth with all maps as they seem to put down more roads than the map service(s) can keep up with.
