I've recently noticed that my 2022 AWD extended range battery usage has degraded dramatically of late and it can't be blamed on the cold weather as it is quite mild.

I don't drive much and only had to charge every two weeks with my home charger. Unfortunately this is awaiting repair and I am having to go to the local garage to charge which is much more expensive.

Currently I am only getting about 170 miles on a full charge and about 1.7kwh. I have taken a picture of the current trip screen which I reset after charging the last time and it has 31% climate use, 57% driving, 4% accessories and 8% exterior temp, is this normal and does anyone have any thoughts on this matter.

The climate usage seems very high for ā€œquite mildā€ weather. Try switching off the E Heat and see if it makes a difference.

If 31% of the battery usage is for climate use, try driving it for awhile with all climate controls off (or maybe just heat your steering wheel and/or seats, and note your efficiency. You can’t do anything about the 8% usage for exterior temperature, but heating to 21*C (70*F) with AC on when it’s 10*C (50*F) is going to affect your range. However, I wouldn’t think it would have that much of an affect.

I don’t think I’ve ever had climate use more than 2%, it’s usually zero. I live in California, and in mild weather, I get 1 or 2% accessories, and 98 or 99% driving, with zero for climate and exterior temp. I never use ā€œautoā€, hardly ever run fan speed more than 1 or 2, and always keep heat and a/c off unless I actually need them.

You are using almost 1/3 of your battery energy for climate. That’s where your range is going.

Your average speed is only about 20 miles per hour, which means motor energy use is low and climate use will predominate. Driving that slow is less efficient because the constant rate parasitic loads such as electrical accessories and heat will continue while there is slow progress to complete a mile of travel.

It's 10ĀŗC outside, which is cold enough to affect range due to heater use. It's not insignificant at those temps.

In summary, to be more efficient you should drive faster (about 35 mph), minimize idling, and perhaps reduce climate usage.

Thanks, the E Heat was on, I've turned it off and seen an immediate improvement on just a short trip this morning. Will see what happens when I next charge the car fully.

Remember, displayed range and %age battery charge (SoC/state of charge) is not symptomatic of HVB health or degradation.

You’ll need Car Scanner app or similar with Bluetooth OBD dongle to get an SoH (state of health) reading for condition/degradation.

Stangy’s SoH was never above 96% since I started monitoring at c35,000 miles and now, coming up to 5 years with more than 123,000 on the clock, SoH is running at 93.5% with little discernible range loss since new.

Before retirement last August when I used to drive the car over distances each day I’d achieve just above 300 in summer and 230 miles in winter - always with air conditioning running all year in the ER RWD Premium I have.

However, over last autumn (US’s fall) and winter post-retirement whilst just driving around town on short runs I struggled to achieve more than 190 miles.

I find it’s the heating & A/Con that saps the power because on many more shorter trips it’s getting car, battery and me up to optimal condition more frequently and so over more miles and time than on fewer long journeys.

This, however, is not a problem for me because my charge station is just in the garage at home so there’s absolutely no inconvenience added to which I have 3-phase charger which charges battery in 6 to 7 hours usually.

Maybe your heater is going bad. Seems to be a thing at about 4 1/2 - 5 years now. Just a thought.

The only stat you should be paying attention to is the miles or km per Khw.

this is in the trip screen. When navigating away from that page is keeps itself in the bottom left corner (most recently used apps) which is great so it’s always being displayed.

In the vehicle settings you can choose that metric to be in miles/kw or kw/100 or something alongs those lines (going from memory)

I prefer the miles/kwh. (I am in kilometers).

I know in the winter up in Canada I always average around 3.5km/kwh, I can get that upto 3.7-3.8 if I keep my highway speed limited to 60mph. Knowing 100% gets me close to 70kwh that’s around 250km total range.

in the summer I can get that upto 5km/kWh getting me closer to 350km per full charge.

All to say, this number becomes more accurate after 20minutes or so of driving. At this point you know exactly what’s going on as far as battery capacity vs usage.
