CDK cyber attack and ford dealer service

CDK, which does billing and other dealer services, is suffering a massive cyber attack, limiting many Ford Dealership activities. I need to get my modem reset and my dealer said they couldn’t get into their system to do that. I am not sure why that is the case, but be aware of the limitations.

Ford’s systems aren’t really affected, but they can’t write their service tickets, bill time, schedule things, etc. so some dealers are just refusing anything that sounds complicated until it’s fixed. It’s a huge nightmare scenario currently, most of them aren’t prepared to do things on paper 1980’s style as a backup. Really shows the reliance on computers these days.

You can try calling around to find a different dealer that doesn’t use CDK products. Should be business as normal there.

My Mach-E is at AutoNation right now. They were able to take it in and work on it, get the parts they needed, etc.
It was all pen-and-paper but they have managed it. I think it’s done because it’s on the charger right now.

Sorta like the Change Healthcare hack a few months ago. These are going to get worse before they get really worse.

According to some news outlets, data that may have been acquired is SSN, DL number, bank account information, credit card information, dates of birth and addresses. It appeared to have been hacked by an Eastern European hacker. The questions are, is it a ransomware where the system can't function or is it files were obtained. Even if the files were obtained, were they encrypted enough to keep them safe, and only the day-to-day business activities of auto dealers are affected. A class action lawsuit has already been filed.

CDK plans to pay the ransom. So much cheaper to keep daily backups and offline weekly.

I ended up an hour and a half after closing signing papers at the Ford dealer yesterday, the person said it would have been much faster if not for the CDK breach.
