My Tesla adapter arrived earlier this week. I just went to three SC sites to “test” it. The first site had small concrete pedestals for each V3 unit. The problem was that there was a Tesla parked at every other unit, so there was no way I could park in the parking spot to the right of a unit. The second was a mile or so away at a hotel. Each of their V3 units was placed at least a foot and a half back of the curb. I suppose I could have driven up the curb to get closer, but I decided to try another site that was another mile or so away. This one had its V3 units placed about 8” from the curbs so I could park in the “wrong” spot and try to charge. ??

I inspected the charger plug and found that even though it’s only about a year old the contacts were lightly corroded. The Tesla adapter slid onto the cord’s plug end without any issue and latched firmly. The adapter also plugged into the car without a problem. The charge ring started flashing blue and charging started. I picked up about 2% in just about a minute and stopped the charge. I was billed $1.53 for that charging session. ??

Can we just take a moment to appreciate that there were three supercharger sites in 3 miles?

LOL I guess. One was completely useless to a non-Tesla (the one at the hotel) the other two were usable, but due to the Model 3s parking in every other space I couldn’t even try that site (a few of the Teslas were not plugged I ). I guess the Teslatati don’t frequent BK much, so I was able to find a few usable spots there. ??

Now you know why I prefer Tesla over EA/EVgo where I live (3 near me) and work (4 near me)...

I have 31 EA stations within 50 miles of my house. Pretty much all meaningless to me though since I don't need DCFC anywhere near my house. I need it on road trips routes beyond range of my house.

And in my part of the country, Tesla V3 coverage is a lot worse than EA coverage. Some entire states in the region only have 1 or 2 V3 stations. A lot of stretches are V2 only.

31 EA stations near your house is great if someone is an Uber driver or otherwise lives in an apartment.

While there may be some V2 stretches, they are (or were?) rapidly getting overlaid with V3s at a quick clip. Tesla has been deploying Superchargers far faster than any other network, so it's a bit shortsighted to declare them useless.

I'm not an Uber driver, thus why so many EA stations clustered near home are pretty meaningless to me. I charge at home unless out of range.

I've seen few signs of Tesla upgrading rural V2s to V3s. Seems like they're mostly adding new urban stations. Hopefully they'll upgrade rural V2 stations soon, but I don't know if that's in the works or not. There's long stretches of I-10, I-40, I-70, I-80, and I-90 west of the Mississippi that cannot be driven by a CCS car using Superchargers alone. Including an 1100+ mile stretch of I-80 (except for Salt Lake City in the middle).

It still helps that there's *some* V3 along the way, of course, but they need a ton of upgrades before they can be the be relied on the whole way on those stretches. It's still mostly EA-dependent.

Wow, I wish before Tesla access came, I had 31 EA chargers to access.

Where I am located, it's a trip to get to the few EA and EVgo chargers.

Now that Tesla is in the picture, I don't have to stress waiting in line at EA/EVgo.

I wish EA had spread at least 20 of those 31 stations out across the region for better road trip access instead of loading so many into one metro area. The closest EA station I need is 100 miles away. There are hundreds of chargers I don't have a use for nearby but when I drive I-70 going west I have to pray the one 4-charger station in Green River UT isn't full/broken like it often is, because there's nothing else for 100 miles either direction. And the Tesla V2 there is no help at all.

I know not all DCFC is for road-tripping, but I think more of it is than what they've allocated. Rural DCFC is very under-served relative to urban DCFC, IMO. I think most EV owners have home charging.

Last summer on our trip from CA to PA I was wishing for the EA in Rock Springs, WY to open in time, but since it didnt had to detour thru Green River. And luckily, at least two of the four were operational. I envied the Superchargers along I-80 in Wyoming. Until you pointed out they're not available to us, and the V2 in Green River. Even with the adapter, we've still got to rely on CCS.

The Rock Springs EA finally opened about a month ago, after a year of sitting there fully constructed but no power. I haven't used it yet, but we will in August on the way back from Reno. Be nice being able to take I-80 instead of I-70 as it shaves an hour off the drive to our home north of Denver.

But even with Rock Springs open, it's a little tenuous since those stations are 100 miles apart with no backups. An 80% charge won't make it 200 miles if there's any problem at Rock Spring or Rawlins. And Laramie still has no CCS DCFC at all.

Flying J has DCFC planned for all 3 towns. That will help a lot, whenever it happens. Be interesting to see which comes first - Flying J, or Tesla V3 upgrades.

Here's what the Pilot/Flying J website shows as planned by the end of 2024. Shows Rock Springs this year but not Rawlins or Laramie.

Of course, since it took EA nearly a year to get their's powered up, it wouldn't surprise me to see a similar delay for Flying J.

Flying J delay? The one in Hubbard, Ohio (just north of Youngstown a few miles from the Pennsylvania border) had all hardware in place the second week of January 2024 but was not open for usage until the third week of June 2024! Too many stories such as this that makes one just shake their head.
