Cost for new windshield

I’m still waiting for Safelite to get a windshield to replace mine. I’m at 5 weeks now. But, I am extremely grateful that I have glass coverage on my insurance. I only have a $50 deductible to pay.

Since this just popped back up in my feed… I am currently at 9 weeks with a cracked windshield and no end in sight. ?

I used to buy glass coverage for years and never used it. Then I found out that any claim against your insurance can have repercussions. One person reported being dropped from his insurance (Progressive) by making just two glass claims.

Here in Arizona, practically everyone has glass coverage. I've repaired 5 chips and one full window replacement on my previous car. Never had an issue with State Farm.

I'm at 4 weeks. I had taken it into a local windhield place that my dealership says they use. At first they quoted me $780 for a non-OEM replacement glass that was available, so I was gonna try that. Took the car in but 10 minutes later they told me that wasn't the right fit after all. Fortunately they hadn't pull the old glass off yet. He said they'd just have to order EOM glass, but they were severely backordered. He's gonna call me when he gets one in. The original quote for EOM (+recalibration) was almost $1300.

FWIW, he said that's the case with a lot of EOM windshields now. All part of the same supply line issue with other things.

The crack on my windshield (passenger side, thankfully) grew to about 40% across the first day, but hasn't moved since. Just hoping it stays there. We're trying to not park it in the sun long. It'll probably grow when we get to cold winter temps, but hoping they get one in by then.

Do you know of any Ford source for this I can use to point to? I'd love to not pay for recalibration, but I'd like something more official I can point the installers to.

I looked through the Work Shop Manual and see these notes:

1. NOTE: If replacing the windshield glass and equipped with a camera bracket, it must have locating pins and spacers to ensure correct alignment. Do not use a replacement windshield glass, without locating pins and spacers.

1. If equipped, carry out the IPMA (image processing module A) camera alignment.
   Refer to: Lane Keeping System - System Operation and Component Description (419-07 Lane Keeping System, Description and Operation).

IPMA Camera Alignment

IPMA camera alignment is required for the lane keeping alert and lane keeping aid to function correctly. The procedure is initiated using the diagnostic scan tool and requires about 10 minutes of driving above 64 km/h (40 mph) on a flat, straight road with highly visible lane markings to complete.

NOTE: Avoid lane crossing, excessive steering angle changes or sudden change in vehicle speed during the IPMA camera alignment process.

NOTE: The alignment completion is indicated on the diagnostic scan tool. If the alignment is unsuccessful, check the IPMA camera for proper installation.

NOTE: The IPMA CAMERA MALFUNCTION - SERVICE REQUIRED message in the IPC disappears when the system is aligned.

The IPMA camera alignment procedure should be performed when any of the following occur:

• Windshield replacement
• Change in tire size
• Suspension repair or alignment
• Front air bag deployment

Thanks. They told me it adds about 1.5 hours to do the recalibration (above the 1 hour to replace the glass).

I would say the same thing. 10 minutes to calibrate. 20 minutes for high speed test runs at the drag strip and then an hour for lunch while they recharge the battery. Standard Operating Procedure.

Is it reasonably safe to forego the recalibration at Safelight with the expectation that the dealership will do the recalibration? P&T.

I had mine replaced 4 months ago, and never had it recalibrated. The local place that did it said their calibration equipment wasn't working and that I should just take it to the dealer to get it done. So I carefully tested out all the features and it seems perfect (lane centering, speed limit sign reading, distance following, etc).

My guess is it depends how careful they are not to bump or misalign the mirror base where the camera sits. Some have said the camera is self-aligning, but don't know if that's true or not. In any case, mine is fine without realignment.

Safelite can do the calibration. The trick is to drive on a road without too much traffic. Try and calibrate on a busy street and it will fail most attempts.

Where, on your first two windshields, did the cracks occur?

First one is like what you show....maybe a little closer to the left side of the car. Second was a large stone or nut etc that hit dead center of windshield. It is brutal out here. We change about 2 or 3 windshields per month in our fleet. DOT does not allow fleet trucks on the road unless the windshield is perfect.

I have always had free glass replacement on all my cars for decades here in AZ. Thought it was required here too but apparently that isn't the case for some people.

Of the 4 previous cars I've owned, I've had to replace the windshield on 3 of them and the driver's side window on the other, so for me, it feels like more of a "when" than an "if."
It's good to know how much it will cost. I've never gone through insurance for a replacement, but the last time I had it done, it was under $500, so it wouldn't have even hit my deductible anyway.
