First thought that comes to my mind is perhaps the charger you attempted to connect to needed more time to initialize after connecting the TeslaTap.

There have been times I've needed to wait over a minute after connecting the TeslaTap to my home Tesla charger. When that happens, I've needed to disconnect and reconnect the TeslaTap, wait a bit longer, and plug to the car again.
Interesting. Is there some signal you wait for or is it trial and error and you just wait longer if it does t work?

Does this button have any function when charging a Mach e using the TeslaTap? I can press it and it makes a click. Or is it only for charging a Tesla?

Interesting to read some reviews on Amazon for the TeslaTap mini. Several reviewers comment on the very tight fit with the Tesla cable. My favorite:

“Works fine, if you can get it to mate and unmate on the Tesla connector. Even with a little silicone dielectric grease, it was very, very difficult for me to install and remove. I'm 5'10, 165lb and lift weights. There is no way my wife could use this adapter. Should've bought a different brand.”

I went to a hotel nearby to test mine. Easy to insert and remove, worked fine.

Thanks for checking! Perhaps there are some batches with different tolerances. Mine was very tight for both of the Tesla cables I tried.

You didn't say if the TeslaTap has successfully worked before. Has it?

If this is the first time you have used it, the obvious troubleshooting next action would be to find another set of Tesla destination chargers and try it again. Maybe there is some incompatibility with those chargers, or maybe you have a defective TeslaTap.

TeslaTap is a very reliable brand, and if it is defective, I am sure they will take care of you. But you should test it out at a different location. If it still fails, blame the adapter.

Good point, I should have said that it was my first time using it. I’ll have to look around for other Tesla destination chargers. I’ll also try to lubricate it. I’m still not clear on how one knows it’s properly seated other than pushing it on as far as it will go.

It should not be that difficult. I have a TeslaTap, not the mini but it seats and connects. I didn't even wait 30 seconds like they recommend. Every time I have used it, it worked with no issues. Not many times, but still.

Just trial and error. I usually just connect my TeslaTap and work on something else for at least a minute before trying to plug in.

The only signal in that my Tesla wall charger will turn red indicating an error, or show scrolling green light indicating charging in progress.

I tested my 80A mini yesterday. Bought a recertifed one for $50 less.

The first charger I tried was giving me “charge station not recognized” errors on the IPC. I then tried another adjacent (and identical) charger and it worked flawlessly on the first go.

Echoing comments mentioned by others, that both connections are extremely snug. You really have to press the charger into the Mach-E - that side was a tighter fit than the Tesla-connection end.

Good to know. I thought the issue was with the Tesla cable end but maybe I didn't have it plugged into the MME properly. That said, something happened when I plugged it into the car--the ring of lights went out and FP said it was plugged in but not charging. But I guess that doesn't rule out an inadequate connection on the TT/MME end.

The charging circle shows 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. If you're at 83%, then the final circle would in fact be lit in some manner.
What's odd is that all of the lights appeared solid (not pulsing) even though I was at 83%, however, per the manual:

  • When zones A, B, C, and D illuminate, and zone E is pulsing, the charge is
    between 80-100 percent.
  • When all zones illuminate, the charge is 100 percent.
I have no idea if this is relevant but could the solid E zone light mean the MME is thinking it's fully charged already so won't accept more charging. Maybe I misread the lights...

No. The car won't think it's 100% charged when it's not.

The Tesla cable end goes into the TeslaTap. So it’s the inside surface of the TeslaTap that needs some lubrication (or the outside of the Tesla charging cable end).

What’s that thing on the Tesla charger handle that looks like a button one would press?
It's a release button.
