Just noticed this. No idea when it happened. The car is paid off and I still have full insurance. Should I get this taken care of sooner rather than later? Or is it okay the way it is?

I assume this is your Panoramic Glass Roof? If your insurance company covers this piece of glass, I'd get it done. If not, I'd monitor it and if the cracks grow, get it fixed then. Getting it fixed is really up to you. Not that I have owned an MME with the glass roof.

As long as it's not leaking, or anything, I don't think there's a huge rush. Several people on these forums have gone many months before repair. (In at least one case, it took them that long to get the new glass in... So if you're going to get it done, it may take a while anyway...)

I'm not in any real rush. I think I want something else anyways as the battery is just not cutting it anymore but I need it to last another 3 or 4 years until technology catches up so I can have a 500 to 600 mile battery while only charging to 80%.

Agreed. If it's covered by your insurance why wait? (As long as there wasn't a traffic accident you didn't mention, it should be part of the comprehensive coverage and therefore not increase your rates.)

As for waiting 3-4 years for an absolutely ginormous battery, I suggest you don't hold your breath. You're talking about more than a 2x improvement in battery density to get what you're hoping for in a car roughly the same size as the MME. A RWD Mach E with the 91 (usable) kWh EX battery gets a maximum of about 320 miles at 100%. To get 600 miles at 80%, at the same miles per kWh, the battery would need to pack in over 200kWh. Or the car needs to be twice as efficient as the Mach E, or some combo of the two.

We'll see, but if I had to bet, I'd guess that the technology will for the most part look pretty close to have we're seeing today (at least for cars designed/made in the US).

If we can't put out the turdumpster fires, we'll be back to leaded gas hogs, with electricity about 10 times what it is today (except for Crony Corp), while the rest of the world continues the quest to save the planet...

I would get it fixed ASAP it will only get worse especially if you live in a part of the country where it snows (UGH) in the winter months.

The glass roof is structural. I expect it will get worse fast. I would get it replaced, and hopefully your insurance covers it.

if you do change it its worth getting protection film put on it. I done front Screen and glass roof

As @JohnFoxeSheets said, the increase in battery density required is dramatic. The press and research companies have been telling us for over a decade that some battery revolution is “3-5 years away” for well over a decade. While there have been incremental improvements, the forecasted improvements in density and output are so far off that it’s actually hilarious every time I see “battery breakthrough” in the press or on the internet.

Hard to tell from the photo you posted, but besides the crack there appears to be a chip which would lead me to think something like a rock hit the top of the car. Thankfully Ford uses laminated glass for the roof glass otherwise it probably would have shattered and dropped beads of glass all over the interior. If it were me, I’d be anxious to have it fixed once all the documentation required to process a claim is complete. I also would insist on getting Ford OEM glass. Brief experience: On my 2016 Ford Flex Limited, two years into ownership on the Mass. Turnpike, a mower cutting grass along the side of the road kicked up a bunch of stones that directly hit and damaged the windshield and passenger side of my car. That includes a few direct hits on the passenger window that cracked the glass about the height of my wife’s head sitting in the passenger seat. The stones bounced off the laminated glass and caused chips and cracks but did not shatter. Had the glass just been the normal safety non-laminated glass that came on lower model Flexes, I wonder if the stones would have broken through the glass and hit my wife on the side of her head. My insurance company tried to use aftermarket non-laminated glass for the repair but I insisted on an exact OEM replacement of laminated glass that was on this Limited version. Had to wait for that to be delivered but worth the wait. I’ve learned to take nothing for granted when it comes with insurance claims and don’t be rushed into buying supposedly equivalent glass that isn’t.

Regarding waiting for a 500 - 600 mile range battery, I don’t think that is realistic at the price point of the Mach E. Personally I am finding the 300 mile range battery on my Mach E Premium AWD with the extended battery is working great for our needs handling all local and short trips using our home and plentiful fast charging network. Would I like to see 400 miles on my next electric car? For sure but only if the cost doesn’t get out of hand. As another forum member mentioned, improvements in efficiency rather than bigger vehicles and batteries would be on my wish list to get more range. I’m looking forward to seeing what Ford has in mind for the next generation EV. The articles highlighting effort being put into efficiency improvement are encouraging. I’m also warming up to the idea of a Ford EREV. Not so much the pickup bodystyle as I prefer something more like our Flex body style. This setup though could be a potential replacement for our Flex to handle longer trips pulling our small 3,400 lb fully loaded Casita travel trailer. I hope Ford doesn’t abandon either effort and keeps the current Mach E going At least until they have the new EV in production. Personally I think they also should have kept the current Lightning going as a placeholder until the EREV is in production. In fact there is a 2025 Lightning Platinum sitting on the lot at my local dealership for at least 9 months unsold. Incentives keep getting better and better but that 300 mile range translates I’m told into 150 miles towing our travel trailer which becomes a challenge. If the EREV extends towing brings that back to 300 or more miles and it still drives fully electric it becomes quite interesting to me.

I have a similar roof crack. mine is approaching 2 feet long & is mostly above the valence area in the front. [2021 EX LR - just POPPED one day & there it was…stress?] in checking with FORD, the part is $1650. installation needs to be done by an experienced windshield-type tech. teslas have a similar configuration, so there are some folks who have become adept at the install. Install is rated at 9 hours. total would be in the $3-4000 range. My Comprehensive insurance will cover this & it is in process now. getting Insurance approval for the total amount takes 2-4 weeks. The installer is handling this paper chase for me. not there yet, allow time to go through the morass…….
