Whoever is operating the car has complete responsibility for what they hit. The beeper is a nice add-on, but if you are backing up and hit someone then it is on you either way.

As for the coffee thing, not to derail to much, but that story is much different than it is usually told. The woman wasn't suing for big money, she wanted help with medical bills. McDonalds knew their coffee was too hot (above restaurant industry standards), and had been paying out tiny sums to tons of people who'd been badly burned. The judge was the one who hit McDonalds with the huge judgement because he felt that they would never change their behavior unless they saw a real penalty.

It was McDonald's PR (and many other large companies PR firms) who re-spun the story into "the US is full of litigious people who will sue you into oblivion for the slightest mistake".

How does that relate to the beeper? I don't know, but I'd recommend just worrying about being safe and not hurting a stranger or a loved one, and not so much about legal liability.
Yes, but extra punitive award from having tampered with a safety system.

Like I said, I like to wear tinfoil hat around the house ?

Be careful. I've heard those can give you a rash.
And attract neutrinos which can cause free radicals within the white matter of the brain. However they do help with 5G.

You are right on that part. But that means very little to the person hit if they are seriously injured or worse dead. That little beeping at least lets other people know to watch out incase it is a stupid idiot behind the wheel of the car. Plus it is not like that beeping is any where as loud as ones you have in say those big trucks.
Again the beeping on those things is again to tell others around the area to watch out just incease the driver who in the end is ultimately responsible misses them

The person who got run over by an EV which had its pedestrian warning disable couldn't hear the car backing up.

Not trying to be the party pooper, but you just can't be too careful these days, especially when talking about tampering with a mandated motor vehicle safety system.
I hear you but respectfully disagree. There are multiple safety systems in place to prevent me from backing over a pedestrian including a camera that I should be looking at. The beeper is the least effective, and the fake motor noise is even less effective than that. ;-)

I have backed up my car multiple times in a parking lot and have yet to see anyone look at me because they heard the beeping. So many people are oblivious and nothing gets their attention except their phone. I don't know how many times I have watched people walk right out into traffic (on a crosswalk, but still) while staring at their phone. They are not going to hear that stupid buzzing my car makes because they are too busy watching a cat video.

Once I install the volume control, I may decide to turn it up when I am in a parking lot. My choice. But when I am backing out of my driveway? Total silence is all I will hear. I can't wait.

That part of ignoring the sound is on the person but they have to be given the choose. Disabling the safety feature is a sure fires way to get your self slammed in a law suit. Plus a quick way for your insurance company to tell that you are on your own.
Also just because they may not act like they don’t here it their brain should still hear it and respond to it.
As for the fake engine noise that is a massive safety feature. As a cyclist I would have zero issue with anyone who disabled that to have their car impounded on the spot. That little sound at low speeds is huge and cycling I rely more on my hearing for anyone coming up behind me. Then old silent EV have more than once scares crap out of me because I flat out could not hear them before they where next to me. At least hearing it let me know a car is coming. At about about 20 mph I can hear the tire noise so again I know the car is coming. That noise alone can mean the difference between holding my line or preparing to move over.
Plus you have to handle the visual impaired people. They need sound to know that something is there. That is there for both.

Next time I come up on a cyclist, I will hit the horn a few times. But seriously, I do some road biking and agree that I am sometimes surprised by cars coming up from behind. Most of the time it is not a BEV that surprises me, though, and usually it is the tires on the road that I hear first.

I also do a lot of running and usually unless it is a big V8 (or something like that), I don't hear the engine until after the car passes me. I do hear the tires, though.

As a cyclist and runner, I have to be aware of what is around me, and cannot rely on my ears. I have to use my eyes every single time. I have learned that and it has nothing to do with BEVs. Because of this I do not believe a fake sound is needed, and mine will be going away. Soon.

I was thinking the same @mkhuffman though I didn’t want to seem like I was picking a fight. Even in a 55 MPH zone, I rarely hear cars approaching from behind when I’m out on my bicycle. Usually it’s the wind in my ears that I’m hearing. Unless it’s some loud redneck hillbilly with mud tires. Those things hum pretty well.

Exactly. I don't see why a BEV needs to be louder than a ICE Honda Accord, but that is what the fake noises do.

Why do we even have mufflers on ICE cars anyway? Don't we want them as loud as possible so everyone knows we are coming? I don't. I like the quiet. Quiet is good, very good.

The only sure fire way to get someone’s attention would be if backing up would disable phone reception within say, a 20’ radius of the car. ?
A little beep is pretty useless.

I can’t be the only one who’s almost stepped in front of a Tesla in the parking lot.

They either sneak up behind you when you’re walking or start pulling out of a parking space with no warning.

And no, I wasn’t on my cell phone. ?

When it’s big vs little (car vs person/bike/motorcycle) noise is your friend. I don’t want someone walking in front (or behind me) because they didn’t hear me coming.

If you’re on a motorcycle, louder the better for your safety. Your neighbors will hate you, but at least you’ll be safer.

I’ve also done the same with a Mercedes’ and a Honda though. These days I keep my head on a swivel and look for those reverse lights to come on. Dark tint doesn’t help either because I can’t tell if there’s even a person in the car getting ready to pull out or not.

Wouldn’t it be nice if they had some sort of noise or alert to let you know they’re backing up? ?
