I have a 2021 Mustang Mach E, and I went to plug in at my home charger (level 2) and received an error message "Charging Error - Mustang Mach E: Please check charger for power. Try another stall or contact charge provider." So I drove to a public charger (level 3) and got the same error message. I then tired a third public charger, also level 3, and it ended up working.

Once the charge was gone, I was hopeful it was a charger error so I once again attempted my home charger, and received the same error message. That's when I contacted Ford Canada. I was told there was a software update that has been trying to install for a month but due to my 12V battery being too low (65% instead of 80%, it would not). I was told that the 12V battery probably needed to be replaced and that there was a chance the software update could fix the charging problem. (At this time, I have not yet replaced the 12V battery)

the Ford Canada representative also noted the problem could be the charging port and if that was the case, I would need to take it to the dealer for repair.

Has anyone else had this happened to them and what was the outcome? Wondering about warranty's too.

Thanks so much!

If you didn't shut the car off for 10 minutes between your charger and the public level 3 one, then it will still be in an error state and won't charge until it has been shut off for a while.

Battery at only 65% is a problem, please get the 12V recall software installed and replace the 12V battery. Then see if you still have a problem.

Thanks so much. Will give it a go. Hoping it’s a quick repair. Will provide an update once I’ve installed it!

There's a couple threads on this forum related to this issue; one has been closed, presumably because the comments were getting a bit contentious. As M-L posted, this is a known issue and Ford should get a fix out post haste.

For me, the problem manifests when I try to charge on a schedule to take advantage of off-peak charging. If I plug in before off-peak, the car attempts to charge and I get the error described. If I connect/reconnect a few times, and cycle the charge port's breaker I can usually get scheduled charging to work, but this is definitely an annoyance.

Did you try and reset your EVSE at home by throwing the breaker? Sometimes they get hung up, and the charge error message is the result.

Ford really needs to prioritize getting the scheduled charging fixed, it’s a big issue in my opinion. Especially when charging off peak is mire than half the cost. For a car stickered at close to $60k us this should not be happening.

I don’t have scheduled charging set up. So I’m not sure this would be related to my issue.

Are you setting the schedule in the car or on your EVSE? I have a dumb EVSE on a heavy relay. If I plug the EVSE into the car, I will always get a charge error outside of the window I set for the EVSE because the car knows an EVSE has been plugged in, but there is no communication from the unpowered EVSE. It always picks up and charges when the timed relay kicks in and provides power to the EVSE.

Update: I replaced the 12V battery, and attempted the software update. The update still came back saying it was unable to finish. I spoke to Ford Canada and on their end, it showed the 12V battery at 64% still.... they recommended booking it into a dealership so that is where I am.

A dealer needs to install the 12V recall software update. It's not an OTA update, dealer only.

The BMS must be reset after replacing the 12V battery. Here's the BMS reset procedure. Make sure you see the battery light flashing, otherwise you didn't do it correctly.

Ford BMS Reset Procedure:
  1. Press the START button without pressing the brake to engage ACCESSORY mode. NOTE: Complete steps 2 and 3 in the next 10 seconds.
  2. Flash and release the high beams with the stalk 5x
  3. Press and release the brake pedal 3x
  4. Battery icon on instrument cluster should flash 3x
  5. Turn OFF the car and open the driver's door
If the battery icon does not flash, you may have completed steps 2 and 3 too fast or slow. Try again with a one-second cadence.

So the vehicle went to the deal ship, they plugged in with no issues so they’re saying it could be a possibility with my home charger. I’m not certain about this though because I did receive the same fault code at the public charger….

Which software update are you trying to install exactly? If it's 10.2.0 and you just got the car back from the dealer, it won't install because the dealer probably already installed a newer version of software with the 12V recall.

If you are talking about a different update, please reset the BMS per the instructions in my previous post (it's important if you want your OTAs to install), and see this for further info on getting failed OTA updates to install: Thread 'How To Get Failed OTAs To Install'

If you are getting a "Charging Error - Mustang Mach E: Please check charger for power." message, that is likely a problem with your EVSE or charging cable. It means there is a plug present but it is not supplying power when the car is requesting it. Some of the EVSEs out there are not J1772 compliant (like some versions of the Grizzl-E), will not supply AC power in the specified timeframe, and will therefore cause charging errors.

Yes that is the update that is trying to install. I called ford Canada back and they’re telling me that update isn’t scheduled to download until November 9 and that’s why it’s failing. Basically it’s downloaded from the server and it’s ready for when it’s released on the 9th.

does that sound right?

No. If you haven't yet, schedule your car to have the 25S65 12V lockout safety recall installed.

Again, the recall update supersedes the 10.2.0 update. You should worry about the recall instead.

The recall is done but the car is still telling me to do the 10.2.0 update.. should I just ignore it?
