I used the Ford supplied mobile charger for over 3 years. Had the first one replaced under warranty and used the second one until it too started showing the amber light. So, time to buy something more permanent. Tesla’s universal charger was an option but it’s expensive and, … Elon. So I went with the ChargePoint, hard-wired with NACS plug ( much cheaper) and paired it with the NACS to J1772 from A2Z that I already had, figuring that the next EV I buy would have a NACS plug. It’s working well and, oh, the next EV is already here as I traded in the ‘21 for a ‘24, still without the NACS plug. Maybe I should have just gotten the J1772 plug …, but, it works.

Thanks. Gonna hardwire a grizzl e 48A. Set it to max that my wiring can take. Looks like I can get 600$ incentive which covers the cost of the unit. Labor should be minimal since the wiring to the garage is already done.

EVSE was well reviewed in that guy Tom's site.

In don't like how the Emporia needs to be wired from behind. I prefer a side or bottom entry so I can keep the current location.

Also at equal pricing, would you get hardwired grizzl-e unit or chargepoint unit?
Be sure to check your breaker and all wiring connections after a failure like you had. Yes, could be a combination of humidity and plug connection making less than ideal contact. or either of those issues….

For a hardwired unit, both the Grizzl-e and ChargePoint are excellent, I have installed a couple Grizzl-e’s and several ChargePoints. The Grizzl-e has superior monitoring software and is a little better built, IMO. The ChargePoint has superior access control features and is better if you will be installing where others may have access to it. So I’ve put ChargePoints at my commercial and rental properties. The ChargePoint also has a user-swappable charge cord, so you can swap out your cord to change to NACS. This way it’s $130 for the cord vs $300+ for a new EVSE.

My one complaint/concern about the ChargePoint is it uses lever-lock connectors to connect both the supply and charge cord wiring. I have not had any failures, but it seems some people have experienced failures with these connections.

The other EVSE to consider is the Tesla Universal Charger. It has an included NACS to J1772 adapter that docks in the side of the unit. It’s a great all around unit and very reliable, but lacks some of the monitoring and other software features that you get with the Grizzl-e or Emporia (also a great charger).

So I need to replace the charger i my indoor garage after 8+ years. The NEMA 6-50 outlet melted and took the plug with it. The blades on the plug were severely corroded which is odd since I never plug/unplug the EVSE. My guess is indoor humidity in the garage gets pretty bad.


My choices are:

1. Replace with a 14-50 plug and get new EVSE

2. Delete the plug and go hardwired, and get a new (slightly) cheaper EVSE.

Any suggestions? I'm leaning towards option 2 so I don't deal with corrosion issues again, but option 1 will allow me to get NACS EVSE in a few years if I want, and just use the Ford supplied unit for now.

I’ve used a ChargePoint set to 48 amp hardwired for 3 years now and couldn’t be happier with it. Absolutely trouble free

I have the Grizzl-E which plugs into a 14-50 receptacle. I have an MME and the wife has a Model 3. I bought an adapter for the Tesla for $38 and use the same cable for charging both cars. I hope this helps, it is a simple setup and the Grizzl-E s set for 40 amps.
