I've received notification from Ford that my Mach-E GT build is complete, and is on its way to the dealer. I've been lightly browsing the forum over the last few months, trying to absorb things that seem important or good to know. My question is, is there a pinned document along the lines of "Things Every New Owner Should Do/Check In The First 2 Weeks"? Should I expect the dealer to install the latest software if not already installed during the build? The dealership is only a couple of miles from where I live, so should I "take the long way home" after taking delivery to ensure the 12V battery is fully charged after several weeks sitting idle on trains and trucks?

  • Make sure your home Level 2 charger is installed and operational, or arrange to do so ASAP. Make sure you get the charger box from the dealer at purchase if taking that power promise deal (may be easier to just take the credit).
  • Order a NACS DC adapter if you will be wanting to use Tesla Superchargers, and a Tesla AC adapter for Tesla Level 2 chargers (two different adapters)
  • Make sure the floor mats and mobile charger (optional) listed on the window sticker are in the car before taking delivery.
  • Set up the FordPass app, activate connected services trials, add your credit card and enable plug & charge
  • Make sure you press the lane button on the steering wheel to enable lane centering and BlueCruise.
  • Set up phone as a key, make sure you add a backup password in case PAAK doesn’t work
  • Change your settings to your preferences, set up user accounts if you have multiple drivers, memorize presets
  • Make sure automatic software updates are enabled and scheduled (default 1AM time is fine unless you’re out later than that
  • Charge the car to 100% and reset driver history if the dealer didn’t yet
  • After plugging in once at home, set up your charging schedule based on utility rates (use 10PM-6AM by default)
  • Disable auto power down timer and leave the car on for at least 12 hours continuously to fully charge up the 12V battery (remove keys while on for security). Or use an external 12V battery charger.
  • Set tire pressures to sticker, or several psi less for greater ride comfort.
  • Perform any touch up detailing if necessary.
  • Arrange to have window tinting or paint protective films installed if desired.
  • Order any additional accessories (such as a MagSafe charging pad) if desired.
FYI the dealer does not do any software updates at delivery outside of those required for a recall or customer satisfaction program. You will have to pay for additional updates. Most people just wait for OTA updates.

And I'd add: check this website and these particular guys' observations and suggestions regularly!

Don’t worry, the car will be programmed up to date at time of build, and will update when due, don’t be paranoid about 12V condition, it’s brand new, or anything else letting it spoil your experience and just enjoy the car, it’ll be a beaut?

Trust me, my cheeks ache like hell because every one of the 117,333 miles I have driven I have so with an ear-to-ear smile of a kid in a sweet shop (candy store as translation for you Stateside)?

This is not intended to sound unkind

Read the Owner's Manual

I find to be very helpful, in addition to reading this forum.

Long Way Home? I say yes! My drive home was 120 miles. I would have driven farther but I was getting hungry and dinner was getting cold ;-}

I would do the math on installing a lvl 2 charger at your house. Most folks dont need it honestly. For my use case it would take MANY MANY trips to a Super charger to make up the cost of the lvl 2 install. Just do the math: I drive x amount a day on avg. I can get back 1.2kwh charging at lvl one. Lest take me as an example: I work from 8-5. Car sits in the garage from 1715 to 0745. I can get back 14+Kwh back in that time. I drive 6.5 miles to work. I so dont need a lvl2 charger. Be nice to have... But just not worth the expense.

Lets play devils advocate and say I take a trip to orlando for the weekend. I can leave with a full battery, go to orlando, drive all weekend and coast back into the garage sunday with say 5% remaining on the battery. 10 hours overnight gets me enough range to drive to and from work all week, not just monday. So monday after work it gets another 10-14 hours of charge and Im back to 85% by wed night.

BUT I would whole heartedly agree that you need to make sure the dealer does all the software updates BEFORE you take delivery. (Some arent even aware they need updates, some flat dont care, some are great.)

Do the level 2, It is not a MachE specific item and once in gives you the ability to charge your next car and the one after that. Put in a level 2 the first week back in Feb 2021. Have that MachE and a second using the same setup, have a Slate reserved and next year may just replace one of the MachE (if it does not suck). Have them put in a 14-50 and you can take the actual charger with you if you move. Sitting at a supercharger like it is a gas station when you could be plugged in at home is silly.
