If it is the windshield, this is WA’s solution. https://wsdot.wa.gov/GoodToGo/PassSelectionHelp/licensePlatePass.htm
I use HOT lanes a ton, but there’s a switch to move the transponder to HOV when applicable so there’s no charge. It a rare for me. We have no toll booths, only full-speed cameras. I’m usually alone. Of course for $0.25 per charge, if you register the plate, the camera charges you without a transponder. But then no hov-free option.

but this...

“
Passes may not work with certain windshields. However, many of these windshields have a designated area where Good To Go! passes will work. If you believe that your windshield may be interfering with your Good To Go! pass, you should take the following steps:

  1. Contact your local dealership or consult your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle has an area in the windshield for radio transponders including Good To Go! passes.
  2. If you find that your windshield does not have a "cut out" area for a Good To Go! transponder, you will need a license plate pass for your vehicle.
  3. If you carpool on the I-405 express toll lanes, you will need to take additional steps to drive for free from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please contact [email protected] and we will notify you how to carpool toll-free with a license plate pass.”
Sucks. I wasn’t planning on using a front license plate. Enough Teslas seem to get away with it

Either this is A WILD coincidence, or my EZ Pass transponder isn't working in the Mach-e. I drove to the dealer in my old car, EZ pass worked. Traded that on the the Mach-e and EZ pass didn't work on the way home. I had to run up to the dealer the next day and it didn't work. I even put it on a different part of the windshield on the way home.

I still need to try it with a different vehicle, but has anyone used EZ Pass yet?
On my wife’s car with the various stuff on the windshield, we had to get a license plate mounted I-Pass. I actually prefer it over having a clunky transponder on the windshield (I-Pass does not seem to have a small sticker type pass).

Man oh man, this is quite interesting now, and something I never thought of being an issue. We have HOT lanes here as well in the Northern VA area outside DC, and on I-95. We do frequently slide the EZPass Flex switch over to HOV-3 so no toll is charged, and was planning on doing this with MME. Can't exactly do that on a license plate transponder, so I really wonder what their solution is in this case.

I just took two trips on the Dulles Toll Road today using my EZ Pass Flex on the Mach-E. Thanks to this thread, I just checked my EZ Pass account and there are no transactions showing. I'll look again tomorrow, but will likely have to call them to see if they offer an external device.
Yikes! I'll be watching this thread, and if you post more about your EZ Pass Flex. I plan on using the Dulles Toll Road, as well as the 95/495 Express lanes as described above. Really hope there is a designated spot somewhere on the windshield where this can work. Won't get to try till next month... hopefully.

@ChasingCoral did you use an EZ Pass on the Dulles Toll road?
this is bad. What will we do on the beltway, 95 and 66?

Exactly. I need the flex to be selectable from inside the car so I can tell the system whether we are hov or not. This is bad...

but this isn’t the first car to have this problem so there has to be a solution already, right?

Yes it’s known that the stickers don’t work through metallized wind shields and I understand these are similar to MME windshield
Illinois doesn’t have stickers rather they are small transpnder units attached to windshield with plastic adhesive velcro like strips so unit can detach and be used in more than one car. Will the transponder units transmit through glass ?

They do offer an Exterior Transponder Mounting option. Goes on the front license plate. I've used this many years ago, worked out fine: https://www.ezpassva.com/pdfs/bumpinstruc.pdf
If you do happen to call them, I wonder if they have a workaround for those that need the Flex slider of the EZPass for HOT lanes.

You would expect/hope! Couldn't find anything about it on their site though. Just a workaround for "residents of Virginia with permanent upper limb mobility impairment." We'd have to call the # or go visit a service center I guess. :(

Unfortunately these front license plate options don't work when you don't have a front license plate...

Yup, you beat me to it. I sometimes have to take the Turnpike home if there is an accident on 77S. What concerns me the most is you saying that you waved it out the window (not blocked by the glass) and it still did not work. Opening the window when going through toll areas would be an easy solution - unless it isn't.

So looking at Tesla forums, they say moujt a weather proof transponder behind the front cone or put it on the rear glass.

They also say there's a dark part of the glass to the right of the rearview mirror that lets it through.

i noticed that the dark material to reduce glare on the windshield isn't textured on the inside so I'll suction cup my transponder to that spot next, then it's sticking my arm out the window as a last resort

I think when I waved it out the window, I was already past the point of detection. I should've backed up but I've already been scolded for doing that in the past ?

And since it didn't detect me entering, waving it when exiting wouldn't work anyway

I have owned the Land Rovers with the same issues and Jaguars as well. My Jaguar E Pace I mounted it on the Moon roof ?. Closest to the front and it worked.

If you re-read this thread, the OP is from OH, and that is what we have, and that is exactly the issue.

Sorry, one reply said sticker and I didn’t go back to original post; my mistake. Illinois has LPT transponders that attach to front license plate so if windshield transponder doesn’t work then I’ll have to order that. Besides Premium models, do the rest have the same problem (excluding Select)?

I think we need more data before making conclusions. Keep an eye on this thread for future experiences.
