It's exactly the same in PA. Now they're not allowed to show that green light because people would slam on the brakes if they didn't get it. They'd rather you kept moving, and they'll just bill you later.

As for the license plate, they have it on record but I think you're right, it's just as a backup in case it can't read your transponder.

OP might have better luck at those booths by simply driving through the express lane and letting them bill his account if the plate is on file.
In some states yes they tie the license plate to account but if they cant read teh tag they may assess a fine for driving "without a tag" - may have to use bumper tags - may be the front plate holders are still needed? They provide these for metalized windshield vehicles in CA

No front plates in PA- if it can't read a transponder or your rear plate - you're off scot-free!
Edit: but if the cops catch you, you'll get that massive fine lol

So yeah... You'd think me sticking it out the window would have worked if it's a glass obstruction. I was thinking maybe the car was interfering with the transponder electronically somehow?
Ohh gotcha. Well, that wouldn't work if you were already up by the booth. The actual reader is waaayyy in the front of the toll booth, about 20-30 feet before you get to the actual booth and that gate. So you'd have had to back up but that's no good.

I think these are the sorts of reasons they did away with the gate and now they just bill you in the mail when you go through without a transponder.

In Illinois if the transponder won't work due to the windshield construction, you order a LPT (License Plate Transponder) which fits on your front plate. Is it for sure transponders won't work on the windshields due to interference?

Until recently, the NY EZ Pass system gave a green light if tag recognized or a yellow with "call EZ Pass" message as you went through the booth (20mph for unattended lanes, 5mph for attended booths). No match of plate to transpaonder AFAIK. I would have told you PA had the same light system based on my limited experience there, guess I was wrong.
Anyway, now all booths (at least on the NYS Thruway system) are being removed and all tolling is by plate or by EZPass, both at highway speeds. Not sure about NYC area bridges.
I thought they recognize plates if you don’t have the transponder. I have not had one in my truck for over a year and I still get the EZ Pass discount.

Hmmm, that is interesting. Not sure if you are a special grandfather case, but all the info I have seen lately as they remove the toll booths on the Thruway shows only two choices - bill by plate or the transponder. Are you traveling on the NYS Thruway or other toll roads?

The trip back after getting the Mach-e, I entered behind another car so I possibly could have snuck in behind him.

Getting off in the ez pass only lane, the gate wouldn't go up. I stuck it out the window and nothing. Someone finally came over and took the transponder and entered the number.

So yeah... You'd think me sticking it out the window would have worked if it's a glass obstruction. I was thinking maybe the car was interfering with the transponder electronically somehow?
Great. . . . I have the same pass as you I think. Little white brick that you stick to the window with Velcro? But no Mach E yet for me to test.

Yes it’s known that the stickers don’t work through metallized wind shields and I understand these are similar to MME windshield

I just took two trips on the Dulles Toll Road today using my EZ Pass Flex on the Mach-E. Thanks to this thread, I just checked my EZ Pass account and there are no transactions showing. I'll look again tomorrow, but will likely have to call them to see if they offer an external device.

@ChasingCoral did you use an EZ Pass on the Dulles Toll road?

from the texas toll

Why does the TollTag have to be mounted on the windshield?
The TollTag operates on a radio frequency and is best read from the windshield’s glass surface. Some vehicles have metallic windshields that can interfere with the electronic signal. In those cases, a customer may request a special TollTag to affix to their vehicle’s license plate.

If it is the windshield, this is WA’s solution. https://wsdot.wa.gov/GoodToGo/PassSelectionHelp/licensePlatePass.htm
I use HOT lanes a ton, but there’s a switch to move the transponder to HOV when applicable so there’s no charge. It a rare for me. We have no toll booths, only full-speed cameras. I’m usually alone. Of course for $0.25 per charge, if you register the plate, the camera charges you without a transponder. But then no hov-free option.

but this...

“
Passes may not work with certain windshields. However, many of these windshields have a designated area where Good To Go! passes will work. If you believe that your windshield may be interfering with your Good To Go! pass, you should take the following steps:

  1. Contact your local dealership or consult your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle has an area in the windshield for radio transponders including Good To Go! passes.
  2. If you find that your windshield does not have a "cut out" area for a Good To Go! transponder, you will need a license plate pass for your vehicle.
  3. If you carpool on the I-405 express toll lanes, you will need to take additional steps to drive for free from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please contact [email protected] and we will notify you how to carpool toll-free with a license plate pass.”

If there is a issue with windshield then the goodtogo passes would have same issue as all these tags use rfid
