Today the front vent registers opened when I first put the car to charge after a drive and I heard some knocking/thumping noise apparently coming from the fans, which at some point went away and then reappeared, I have only seen these registers open once in winter and never heard that noise back then. Normal or should I be concerned to address this at the dealer at my first service ? It’s 2024 awd er. Thx

You need to address this with your dealer. Give them an early “heads up”, because you may have an early failure of the louvers gearbox controller/actuator. I had that on my MME 2021 Job 1. The “heads up” is for them to able to have the part on hand and not have to wait for a week to ship to your dealer.
That knocking will progressively get louder and eventually fail.
The gears are plastic and they will start grind with each other.
Heads Up, this is what you are looking at. The complete replacement of the control/actuator has fixed the problem with my MME.

Are you referring to the louvers that open and close at the front of the car? If yes they open without any issue it’s the fan that’s knocking after they have completely opened. I should have indicated that the noise does not emit from the louvers opening rather than from whatever fan kicks in after they have opened. I cannot hear that fan knocking if the louvers are closed.

The dealer will be able to steer you in what is about to fail. My situation was very clear. The actuator had failed.
In your situation might be a bit different or not. Get it taken care of it.

Sounds like you might need a new radiator fan.

That’s what I thought. Any easy way to reproduce at the dealer’s? These louvers don’t open that often.

They just need to run the air conditioning.

Thanks any implication driving like this for some time or should be addressed right away? Noise seems to come and go so not permanent.

Fan is still working and isn't needed above 35 MPH for cooling, so no.

Thanks you are helpful as always. Also does the ac on trigger the louvers to open while standing ?

Yes, depending on the heat load. Max A/C should open them up.

I actually wonder how straightforward is this tan assembly replacement is? Do they need to remove the front bumper?
