Ford set to challenge Tesla

Hopefully others can access this article, it's pretty good. It mentions that Doug Field moved to Ford from Apple. Once at Ford he has worked to embed Apple Maps directly into the next gen of Ford EV's. Essentially Ford built Apple Maps natively into the vehicle itself (separate from Car Play). It will be integrated into their Universal Electric Vehicle Platform.

Pretty much does everything that people have been asking for: Traffic, routing, knows where chargers are, does preconditioning. It will integrate with an upgraded BlueCruise arriving in 2027 that will handle complete highway travel. Apparently there are plans to progress to "point to point autonomy", similar to Tesla's supervised self driving. Fords final milestone will be eyes-off Level 3 driving in 2028.

Just googled that, as the first article above didn't mention Field had left Ford. But yes apparently he left in May.

I believe it's called "Ford Digital Experience" and there are TWO vehicles that have it - Ford Explorer and Ford Expedition, in 2025...

In short, Ford promises, and then doesn't deliver. Time after time. You can find where they said 2023 Lightnings would have it. And Mustangs. Never happened.

Saying the mach-e and Lightning would come with Android Automotive was an understandable (I think) extrapolation from the AA announcement, but it's not what Ford actually said. Press releases are designed to lead people to a conclusion while leaving an out. Ford used that out. Big Time.

That lab cart is the entire vehicle's low voltage electrical system. So un-legacy of them.

I wondered if it would ever actually happen at a place like Ford. They all do the talk. The future speak. But the new platform looks like it's shaping up to truly be as un-legacy as anything a legacy manufacturer has yet done in-house.

I believe Ford is now saying “on-ramp to off-ramp” for their hands-off, eyes off system, not “point to point”. Constraining the system to limited access roadways simplifies the problem.

I wonder if Field's focus on Apple hindered refinement/development/expansion of BlueCruise 1.0-1.5.

Easier to work with does not necessarily mean better or a faster route to the end product.

Yes. And…

A well written technical white paper or press release also generates more conversation about what “they really mean,” which is free press and follows a well worn human behavior, from QAnon to teenage crushes. We’re dying to fill the blank spaces. And it’s super fun! I’m literally here for it!

A smart company will watch the conversation in forums or social media to then game their strategy. Ford (or any company) can hold a round table, release “thought leader” pieces, and so very cheaply. It’s a a trial balloon. It’s why we argue about whether or not we like the balloon than argue that it exists. ( Ford is listening)

Less fun: technical documentation or legal documents. They’re meant to leave little room for interpretation because they have high accountability. If Ford incorrectly tells you how to install a suspension, and it results in a crash, they have accountability. No one’s going to hold them accountable for a bad press release. It’s future tense and they can say they just change their minds.
