I've not heard of one single case of the hatch opening while in motion. Conversely, I've heard of many cases of it randomly opening in park over the past 2-3 years (happened to me once too). My conclusion is it will only happen in park. If someone actually observes it opening while in motion, THEN a NHTSA report can be filed. You should report based on what actually happened and not speculate too much. There are additional safeguards that prevent opening while the car is in motion.
I wouldn't suggest that anyone should report something that hasn't happened. They should just report that the hatch seems to open on it's own and they shouldn't speculate that it would only happen while parked just because that was their experience. That's part of what a safety inspection should figure out.

There's another (much less noble) motive as well: reporting the issue to the NHTSA creates an official record (outside of Ford's control) of this issue. That would encourage Ford to take the issue seriously and actually try to repair it. If several people report it, it would also create an official record of this happening to multiple people...

You should see the logic that goes into this hatch...
Which gets me to thinking, have you received the Zone update OTA? That made all zones 1? I'm wondering if it's a bug.
It is insane what it takes to open. No wonder these cars have so many "quirks"!

I don't know if I have received the Zone update. Last time I checked, which was just before I had my HVBJB recalls done, about four weeks ago, I was fully updated. I haven't seen any updates done since then.

This happened to me yesterday in a parking garage. By the time I saw it the hatch was fully opened.

? Truth!

Since I wasn't near the car either time, and the only time the hatch has ever hit anything was when it phantom opened, I don't believe it was from damage.

I guess I'll just either start backing in to my garage (not my preference) and hope it never happens when I need it to stay down. Thanks everyone, for your responses. I'll just go with, as my husband says, "It's quirky!"

I guess all race horses are high-strung.
"It's quirky!" might be the best explanation. One time, immediately after an update, I hit the driver side door button and the passenger side rear door popped open.

Just had a thought, do you have "open all doors" enabled when you unlock the car? Maybe try turning that off?

If you're opening the trunk every time you unlock the car this is a feature, otherwise this would be a bug that affects you regularly... I would be unhappy.

interestingly mine opened today when I opened the drivers door. Car was locked, walked up from the front, hit door button, got in and found the hatch opened. It's windy today and after pulling the car into the garage I found a leave (half the size of my hand) under where the car was parked. Perhaps it was in the wind for me.

This just started happening to me this weekend. The car is normally in the garage but I backed it out for easier access to yard tools (I was working around the yard) and while working in the yard, I watched as the lift-gate opened. I did have my phone with me (I use PaaK) but the phone was locked (I pulled the phone out of my pocket to make sure it hadn’t somehow unlocked and maybe I’d inadvertently pushed a button on FordPass). I considered that maybe some blowing leaves may have triggered the motion.

I closed the lift-gate and resumed working … a short while later (maybe 5 minutes) and it happened again. So I pulled out my phone and killed FordPass.

Today I went into the garage (car parked inside) and as soon as I walked up the car … the lift-gate opened. I went to the hardware store and … while returning to the car, the lift-gate opened. I made a visit to another store and … when returning to the car the lift-gate opened. Later that evening I went out to the garage to use the car and as soon as I approached the car … the lift-gate opened.

It’s now happening NEARLY every time I approach the car. I’m looking under the car to see if there is something hanging or stuck that might be responsible for triggering the sensor … but I don’t see anything.

No recent software updates to the car that I am aware of (At least nothing I’ve received a message about). The most recent message was that my 12v was low and may need service (I put it on a battery charger and topped it off — and no messages since.)

This happened to me once over a year ago in the pouring rain as I was running toward the car but never did it again.
