So my Mach E just got back from the shop after some road debris flew up cracking my headlight ($1800) marking up my bumper ($1400 repaint) and chipping my windshield ($1800). I had asked the shop if I could keep the cracked headlight as it wasn't that big of a crack, and I thought I could figure a way to power the headlight LED's and make it a "show piece" in my garage or something.

Anyways, upon picking up the car (they did a great job BTW) the headlight was in the back and when I opened the tailgate I was blown away with exactly how big that headlight assembly actually was!! I've done aftermarket headlights and work on other vehicles and this thing is massive!!! Never would've guessed that much material was hiding behind the bumper etc. Anyways, due to its size my plans for a decorative piece is scrapped as its won't look as cool as I had thought.

When I originally picked up my MME, one of the first things I asked the guys at the dealership was what they thought it would cost to replace the headlights. They guessed a grand at least. I like to know these things in advance to lessen the shock. Not sure that kind of cost is reserved to the Mach-E or even BEVs in general. New cars have ever more fancy headlights. Not surprised they are so expensive. Of course the Mach-E is also a relatively new vehicle too (probably not a lot of 3rd party replacements available).

Please tell me your insurance kicked in on the costs.

Yeah, insurance picked this up under comprehensive. Total cost was $5k, I paid $100 deductible.

This is one of the reasons I opted for the Ford extended warranty WITH the lighting coverage. That way if a headlight or any of the other led lighting burns out it will be covered under the contract. Even one repair will more than cover the cost of the policy more than 2X.

I'm surprised they let you keep it. Ford usually adds on a core charge for them and you only get it back when your send in the bad light.

Interesting, I didn't know that. Perhaps they ordered from the supplier that produces for Ford vs Ford directly??? I don't know. I had originally thought the headlight would've essentially been the shape of what you see, not all the stuff below the headlight (hidden by the bumper) so isn't as appealing looking standalone.

Presumably you could creating housing for it to make it look presentable. (Whether or not it would be worth it is another matter...)

Wow, I knew like heisnuts said these would be expensive to replace if they died, but it's a bummer you can't simply replace the headlight cover if the only problem is a crack in it.

Wow what a bummer.

I have to wonder if ppf on the headlight might have mitigated that damage.

Yeah I didin't think it was going to be that expensive either. Really not a ton of actual damage, but apparently new car parts are made of gold.

Yeah, I'm regretting not moving forward with getting the full car ceramic coated and front PPF'd when I first got it, but I had just dropped a $$$ on down payment, wheels & tires, tint etc. so was gonna wait a few months to build funds back up. It's now high on my to-do list.

Yeah one would think they could replace the clear plastic lens since that is all that was damaged.
