That’s great! Can you please post the video?

This thread has gotten a bit zany, but to the question of more detailed measurements, everyone here already has a precision acoustic measurement device with frequency capabilities - the smartphone.

There are iOS and Android apps that can measure dB and display a spectrogram from the measurements. I like Decibel X, in part because I use it for doing safety checks at factories and it does a good job of saving reports, and has a lot of visualization abilities. The calibration is quite good - I wouldn't take it to court but I've checked it against industrial meters and found it very close (close enough that you don't know which is closer).

This example trace is me setting the phone near my microwave, then running the microwave for 5 seconds and turning it back off. You can see the two "beeps" appear at about 1.8khz, and you can see the dominate frequency mode for my microwave (500hz). The max db of the trace was 60db. Don't have my MachE yet or I'd test it instead!

Taking a look at a few of these, measured in a stopped car with the HVAC turned off, would probably make the issue more visible than a video or audio recording.

All I hear is ambient noise. I’ve found it is quite difficult for smartcam mics to record the buzz unless resting atop the pommel of the steering wheel.

Can you try a recording from that position? Try the hazard test! See first post.

My phone likewise fails to record buzz at “head position” because the mic gets too swamped with air noise. So that doesn’t make a recording more reliable - it just shows that phone mics need to be closer to sound sources to not get swamped by ambient noise. My video then moves the cam right in front of the silent infotainment screen to prove that the buzz isn’t just a function of recording so close to the screen.

Understand where you are coming from, but that is where my head is is all driving modes. I can hear my breathing, but not the screen, I don't need it to get any quieter. Like I said it was not an issue for me and so I'm moving on....

If you could please make an apples to apples video with the first post I sure would appreciate it. As I’ve said repeatedly, camera mics are not as sensitive as ears, so making a recording where the mic is likely to be confused by ambient noise is not helpful. What is helpful is comparing two videos shot apples-to-apples.

I’m not saying that everyone will hear the same thing. I’m trying to figure out if all screens buzz the same and I can’t do that without apples-to-apples videos.

Thanks for posting this. I actually do hear it but your video is fainter than most. There seems to be a lot of other ambient noise in your video though, did the a/c come on automatically when you turned the vehicle on? If so, would you mind recording one with the a/c off, ideally closer to the driver display (at least for me, I’m hoping to use a video of a quiet screen to ask Ford for a fix and don’t want the service rep to say ‘well of course that one seems much quieter, look where that camera is placed’).

Nothing else was on. I turned up the volume enough that you can hear me breathe. That's where the ambient noise is coming from. Keep in mind I was sitting right there and heard nothing.

To address some of the discussion about variances due to different devices, here are three new videos I took just now one after the other with three different Apple devices:

The below video is from an iPhone SE (2020):

The below video is from an iPad Pro 11” (2021):

The below video is from an iPad Pro 9.7” (2016):

For all three videos, I start with the device very close to my chest and move in right up against the steering wheel without pushing the device through the steering wheel’s hollow center. I keep my seat as far back as it goes in the Mach-E.

To me, for my Mach-E the buzzing noise is very audible from the very beginning on each of the three videos (i.e. when I am pulling the device close to my chest and the seat again is 100% as far back as it will go in the Mach-E).

The videos sound pretty similar to me as far as the buzzing noise goes, except I hear a lot more ambient noise with the oldest device, the 2016 iPad Pro 9.7”.
