Is AWD function active on demand or all the wheels move by default?

Im sorry if its a stupid question but for those who have an awd model, is that function activable on demand or all the wheels move by defaulT? I ordered a rwd drive mainly for the range gain but if the awd mode can be activate or deactivate at will, it might change my choice
