One week into my ownership. Taking a 161 mile trip, I left home the Mach E said 244 miles to empty. I drive 130 miles and had to stop to recharge, it says I have 23 miles to empty!???

What is going on here?

Not in half but it has been 23-28 degrees here in GA for the last week so expect 1.9 to 2.1 driving on the freeway in winter vs 2.6-2.8. If you are driving 80 mph like most Georgians do, then expect the low end. Also, your car probably hasn't learned your driving style yet so it's still using initial estimations for range. My car has me at 213 miles at 90% charged right now

Maybe even more when very cold temps are combined with speed and hills. This should not come as a surprise. Did you do any research prior to buying your MME?

I did from my dealers and other drivers that have them but this cold weather here in GA has been pretty bad as of late so I guess none of us thought about how much that would affect the range. I knew there would be an adjustment but not by Half!

My range in this weather in my extended range AWD driving 75 mph was 200 miles. I took a trip to Lamar MO last year in sub 25 weather in the mountains in which I had to charge around every 130 miles. My Trip to Myrtle beach last summer was 230 miles that I could get there without a charge and around 9-10% left.

In addition to the explanations that folks are giving such as, outdoor temperature, terrain along the route, and how heavy your right foot is I just wanted to offer a suggestion.

Always use the built-in nav, always, for every trip local or not. Definitely, especially, and specifically ALWAYS put in the DCFC station that you are heading to if you are on a road trip and are needing to fast charge.

When you get into your car and start to drive, it has no idea where you are going, how long you are going to drive, etc. So, it makes a guess at how much range you might have based on your driving history stored in your user profile. So, for example, if you usually drive short trips on flat roads, it is going to give you a rosy range such that, if today it happens you are going to drive up Pikes Peak and don't tell it you are going to do that by entering the destination in the nav, it clearly has no idea today isn't going to be like your driving history.

Similarly, when you are on a road trip, entering in the DCFC as a destination allows your car to "precondition". This is a process by which the car does extra work to optimize the temperature of the batteries in anticipation that you are soon going to attempt to stuff them full of electrons!

The reason I am saying to use the nav every single time, even local trips, just to the grocery store, etc. is that, as a new owner, it will give you a better sense of the true range of the car in different scenarios. For example, if you enter a destination into the nav, it will popup a message to the IPC (that's the screen in front of you) something to the effect of "range calculation adjusted due to route" or some such.

After a while, you'll really get to know your car and this will be less necessary, but until you get used to the system in a few different scenarios (local vs. long distance; cold vs. mild vs. hot temps), this will really help you.

Note :: Preconditioning, etc. DOES NOT HAPPEN with the current software if you use Android Auto or Apple Car Play, so when I say built-in nav, I mean built-in nav.

Are you saying that the cold weather can cut my range in half?
Close to it.

In the summer my reported range at 85% is between 290 and 300.

In the normal Georgia winter temps (high near 50, low in the mid 30's) my reported range at 85% is between 240 and 250.

In the past few days in Georgia with the high in the mid 30's and the low in the teens my reported range at 85% is between 200 and 210. That is a 44% drop in reported range between summer peak and winter valley.

And that is with my normal grandma style driving. If I were actually driving at highway speeds I would see an even larger drop in reported range. We don't even see the biggest drop since our winters in Georgia are relatively minor.

But it really doesn't matter if your day to day driving is under 175 miles a day.

Road trips in the winter will require more frequent and longer DCFC sessions.

It’s a 112 miles to North Vancouver from Seattle. I can drive there and back without charging in my GT.
I exclusively use BC. And it’s mostly flat.

My car is rated at 400km, or 240 miles. In summer, I assume 60% usage of that before charging, 144 miles. So 2 hours driving highway.

In winter in southern Ontario, I assume 180 miles maximum, so at 60% between charges, 108 miles. 90 minutes highway speed.

That's rock solid no stress driving. YMMV
