It can coast, too!

You can coast in 1-Pedal drive too, just hold your foot in the neutral position. If you don’t like the sudden regen, then don’t abruptly take your foot off the pedal. Gradually let it go instead. You can learn to be smooth with it.

Personally I find the control of regen is much more coarse with the brake pedal compared to the finer control with the accelerator pedal, which is why I use 1PD (smoother, more precise braking).

The beauty of the profiles on the MME is that you can set the car how you want it and link those preferences to a key. You can then set how your wife likes it and link that to her key. So, if you like 1PD/Unbridled (and/or whatever other setup) and she likes 2PD/Whisper you can both have the car as you like it. The caveat there is that you have to use your key and she has to use hers. ??
I have setup two profiles as well for the same reasons (engage with one pedal & whisper two pedal). We only use one key, as you can create the profile on-screen. Icon in upper right enables driver to select the profile. (Also remembers seat position, climate, etc)

Heh, I have two profiles set up exactly the same (Unbridled/2 Paw Drive) just because I was playing with keys. ??

I like to coast too... used efficiently it is the best way to hypemile. One Pedal has way too much braking for me. Unbridled as well. I prefer the engage mode for just the right amount. sometimes change the dial to neutral when approaching a light or similar. every time the battery converts to drive or vice versa there is efficiently loss. So coasting is still a great option. whisper has the most built in coast, but I prefer engage with an occasion dial shift to neutral.

The longer I use it the more impressed I am with how controllable it is. ESPECIALLY in winter driving. When I first got the car I assumed the old advice of "never use cruise control in slick roads!" would apply to 1-pedal driving as well but as it turns out the regen is extremely well controlled.

I use Engage mode without 1PD almost exclusively because its level of "coasting regen" feels very much like the gentle regen that my Highlander Hybrid has. Unbridled Mode's regen is a bit too much like 1PD for my tastes. And the only time the "brake coach" doesn't show 100% Energy Returned when I'm braking is when there's a stop light that changes at just the right moment that I can't make it through and have to brake harder than normal. (From what I understand, the brake coach is not really showing how much energy is gained via regen, but really showing how smooth your braking curve was...)

My wife, who usually drives the Highlander, got real nervous when I needed the Highlander for a road trip to an EV Charging desert. But when I got back, she said "It drives just like a normal car!" about the MME.

Unless you reef on the brakes you use almost 100% regenerative braking in 2 pd driving. So you do not lose any regen. My braking has always been very smooth and I have never experienced any jerky transition as the car comes to a stop.

As far as coasting goes you will find that the car coasts best in whisper mode. I find engaged matches the feel of my ICE rig so I chose that mode. Unbridle has to harsh of regen for my taste.
I think you lose some. Unless I am mistaken, coasting does not disengage the motor — that would be a mechanical mechanism that sort of defeats the purpose of no transmission. I believe it applies a slightly less (and decreasing) charge to the motor to keep the car coasting
Instead of full on engine breaking. One pedal drive probably provides the most regenerative breaking. I think using the efficiency coach you can get close though.

I think that’s not how it works in Tesla, but I could be wrong. But good info to know that in MME it doesn’t matter.
The Tesla is by comparison to any other EV, kinda crude in this measure. The brake pedal in a Tesla is only brakes, no regen. The MME blended braking gives you options while maintaining efficiency... as do most other EVs.

total regen available is the same 1 pedal or 2.

Well you never really coast unless you are in neutral or maybe perfect 1 PD operator. Unless you are a poor driver I believe you can get 100% regen all the time. Only time I do not, I believe, is a quick light change when I have to stop quickly.

Since day 1, I drove my GTPE with one pedal mode and auto hold mode set to ON.

My wife mainly drives her Lexus RX450h, a fairly heavy six cylinder hybrid SUV with that floaty glide drive that Lexus is known for. She really likes it as she came from a Prius. I find it boring and the CVT drone annoying, but I appreciate that it is a proven, reliable, and comfortable model.

Anyway. When I asked my wife why she prefers the Lexus over Mach-E, she said that she really likes how gasoline cars coast.

I thought about what she said. I recalled that our previous EV was a Tesla and there was way to switch off regenerative braking in Teslas completely. She was also not fond of Teslas (for many other reasons that are irrelevant here).

With that coasting comment in mind, I switched off the one pedal mode (and for shits and giggles, also switched off the auto hold) to match the driving modes to the Lexus.

And that immediately made me realize that Mach E can coast, too!

Believe it or not, I actually really like it that way now that I’ve been driving it like this for 2-3 days.

The stop and go in Mach E has a little “jolting” with the blended braking. Not having the one pedal mode on reduces that jolt significantly. And while driving an EV with one pedal is great, switching it off has made the driving experience a little more natural / traditional, IMHO. Yes, I have to start braking a lot earlier now so that there’s no hard braking at the end that this heavy car doesn’t like but again, it feels kind of nice!!

I am aware that driving without the one pedal mode burdens the brakes a lot more, but my wife appreciated it right away as it was instantly like driving her Lexus, just a lot quicker off the line, of course.

But the beauty of this is that Mach-E can be instantly made to drive like an EV or it can be made to drive like how a traditional gasoline car drives.

Give it a try. Some of you may actually end up liking it or at least appreciate the difference it makes with a couple of toggles. But make absolutely sure to REMEMBER that you’ve changed the modes because you may be caught off guard and the car will lurch forward when you’re not expecting it to with your foot off the brakes. :)
I hate one pedal, it's like driving a lawn tractor. I drive my GTpe very hard and most of the time when I come to a complete stop using the brake pedal it shows 100% energy recovered. You have to be in engaged mode to see the brake coach. The only time regenerative braking is disabled is when using unbridled extended, which is only for track use.

The hypermile comments are interesting to me.

I have tried whisper with 1PD off during my 143 mile commute and efficiency was much worse than when I use 1PD. I made a very diberate attempt to coast and avoid excessive acceleration and deceleration, anticipating traffic flow. In a ICEV, that would have resulted in much better fuel economy, but not in my MME. The difference shocked me actually, because I expected the opposite.

I used to advocate for coasting to improve efficiency, but based on my real world results, I don't think that is the most efficient way to drive the MME.

People preferring 2PD just proves to me that not enough people know how to drive a stick.

Which makes me sad.

Same with my wife and me with the RX450H. She drives it like it's stolen and gets nearly 29mpg. I woosiefoot it and manage 24mpg.
