It’s already lying dormant in the software and they just need to push a signal to the car to flip a metaphorical switch to enable it. Just like with BlueCruise.

Much less involved than pushing a software/firmware upgrade.

Insurance question. When a 24-25 GT is insured, does the VIN indicate whether or not it has the performance upgrade?….or does the insurer verbally inquire at the inception of the policy?…..or does the insurer just not care?
That's a great question, but since I would be purchasing the upgrade after the fact, it won't be part of the VIN, and at my age, I have been known to be forgetful of what I ate this morning, so it will be my little secret.

All the VIN tells the insurer (or anyone else who knows how to decode it) is that the car is a GT, a 4X, a 2X, etc. The VIN doesn’t include all of the build details of the car. So a GT with or without the stinky option will cost the same to insure. Pee-yoooo! ??

The VIN does not indicate the performance upgrade even if it came from the factory with it. My insurer never asked about it nor do I think they even know about it. Only wanted the VIN and miles and I didn't offer any more information.
I think they’re charging us the higher of the two rates, though. I had to pick up my jaw off the floor when I got the most recent bill. It was considerably higher than what I paid on my 2022 Premium Mach-E. Both my wife and I barely drive, are middle aged, with excellent credit and driving record (no tickets in 15+ years since I ditched my red corvette)… which is partially due to how Chicago tickets speeders (via camera not a personal interaction, so your record stays clean) and because I lawyer up and fight every one ??‍♂

When you say charging us the higher of two rates, do you mean with or without the performance upgrade? My '24 GT came from factory with performance upgrade. My friend's '24 GT did not. Both cars were produced in August of last year. I gave my insurance company both my VIN and his VIN to see what the cost would be. There was no difference. Then I gave them a VIN from a Premium and it was a little less but not by much. My insurance has doubled in the last 3 years from what it was. I have not had a ticket since the '80's and no accidents. However, I am 70 and do drive quite a bit as far as they are concerned (20K miles per year) so that probably has something to do with it as well as living in CA.

I mean we are paying the equivalent of 700 lb-ft and full 3.3 sec capability regardless whether we have it or not.

I think insurance is hugely impacted by the company and what type of risk they like to take or not take.

There’s a Harvard Business Review case about Progressive and how they give you quotes from their competitors because they want to reject in a way that maintains goodwill. Apparently State Farm doesn’t like performance automobiles!

Ok, now I understand. Yes, I guess that could be true but options, and that performance upgrade is an option, are not reflected in the VIN so I still don't think we are paying for that extra HP. I personally think it is because it is an electric car and maybe cost more to repair (batteries if damaged?). I don't know but I argued with my insurance company why the cost to insure my '21 Mach-E GT was much higher than my '20 ICE Mustang. My ICE Mustang cost double what the Mach-E is, it is now worth triple what the Mach-E is, has 200 more HP, built for the track, is a Shelby and still, the insurance is less. Now, my '24 Mach-E GT is even more than my Shelby but that is to be expected I guess since it is 4 years newer.

My 2024 GT was nearly twice as much to insure as my 2021 GT-PE when I was at the dealer changing it over. I had no accidents and no claims in the 2021’s tenure with me. Apparently telling the insurance company that I wanted the same insurance coverage meant to them that I wanted a bunch of stuff added. I didn’t figure that out until I got my policy bill for my second semester of insurance. Now, the insurance on the 2024 is still higher than on the 2021, but it’s at least reasonable. ?‍♂?

I think everyone’s insurance has doubled in the last few years. Labor and parts of course are a lot more.

Interestingly, the 2nd most expensive car to insure for my family right now is actually the one I would think would cost the least.

In order of highest to lowest 6 mo premium-

23 Lincoln Aviator Black Label- $680
25 Chevy Trax- $630
11 Mustang GT- $547
21 Mach E GTPE- $504
69 Mustang Mach 1- $270

Why is the Trax so expensive? 137 hp 3 cylinder under $25k new. ?
