I’ve got the Select LFP. Really happy with it
overall.

my Dad wants to sell his 2017 Escape and get a MachE as well.

the Long Range NMC battery is about 4000$ CAD more.

Factoring in my dad doesn’t really need the extra range but the additional cost isn’t an issue either.

Given the choice, which battery would you choose based on the technology and long term reliability. The most important aspect is he’ll keep this car for the next 10 or more years.
Both will last 10 years.

Does he care about price and horsepower?

The premium AWD is significantly faster (0-60 in 4.1) if he cares about that sorta thing.

Even though I don't drive around much daily anymore range and acceleration were most important to me. Every now and then I take a trip, and then range is king!

You can tell him that I bought the extended range and learned that I don’t need the extra miles. I could have saved a couple of thousand dollars. I feel silly.

I can leave it plugged in and the winters in Northern Virginia aren’t too cold (a couple of days get very cold). And the difference in performance wouldn’t be noticeable to me. The select standard range is still plenty juicy. Your mileage may vary.

The 2025 Select RWD Standard Range vehicles are a steal for what you get. At least in the US.

The major arguments for LFPs are simple - no nickel, no cobalt (no more child labor), higher flashpoint (less likely to start fires during a thermal runaway), and lower cost.

The negatives are major though - energy density is mediocre and LFPs don't work well in subfreezing temps because the operating temperatures (slightly warmer range) are different from NMC cells.
