Revisiting this dated thread in case anyone is interested in how this has evolved... I took my car to a dealer for whatever that battery safety update was, and the dealer said they installed some other new software as well. The lock button worked seamless ever since. Sometimes it requires two touches (may be my clumsy fat finger), but usually it works from the very first try on all four doors. The dealer acted like they knew about the issue. I was skeptical initially but somehow this did get resolved - very happy!!
Took delivery only like 2 weeks ago... don't know if I have an update... but this delay in locking is /the/ most annoying thing about this car during my first weeks - the 2nd is that there is no hard/easy button to open the rear hatch inside the car.

2022 mach e GT here. I find the lock touch button works better when i touch above the lock symbol with key fob in my pocket. It usually locks in a second. If i only have my phone, it may delay 3-4 seconds. Hope it helps.

Using the door code and the pass code, you can drive the car without any physical key or phone.
I think they call that the Backup Start Passcode. It does send an alert on FordPass that the car is being driven without a key.

FYI the car has to ping your fob or PAAK when you press the lock button before it will lock. If no key is in range, the lock button won't work (7-9 and 9-0 will always work though).

I've noticed with my phone in my pocket, it won't lock if I have my bag sitting on my hip. When I move the bag out of the way, it locks. I assume it was blocking the signal too much. With PAAK you need a clear shot from your phone to the Bluetooth antenna in the side mirror or rear door panel to authorize a lock request.

I just use the key fob to lock the car, or if you walk away it locks fairly quick, I disabled the door code when i purchased the car because i dont want anyone using the keycode on the door to open or take the car,, also if i loose my key i could open or start the car with my phone if needed i think,,, of course they do it this way so you dont lock the keys in the car, i work at a huge 7 Brand Auto Mall Dealership, ( 37 Acres of cars ) the ram vans cannot be locked unless you use the key fob, & yes i wish there was a rear hatch open button inside the drivers compartment area to flip the rear door open :) if there is one i have not found it yet ? LOL i may be looking fornew buttons on the mach e for the next few months:),,,To be honest at my age (65) there is plenty of, or maybe way too much technology to operate a car these days, but it is a fun car to drive, and fill with gas :) ( or electrons :)

The code the car comes with is randomly generated. The odds of anyone guessing it is rather low. Plus you can be program your own code as well. In addition, the code needed to start you car in the absence of a fob or PAAK, is completely different than the door entry code and has to be programmed by you after setting up PAAK. The only person you’re slowing down trying to get into the car without a fob is yourself.

The car will attempt to prevent you from locking your PaaK inside the car.

Once time I used inside door lock to lock the car with the door open, and when I shut the door the car did not lock. For a few seconds I was thinking "great, another software glitch" or some other problem was happening, and then I realized my phone was still sitting on the center console.

So I suspect the car is searching for your PaaK because it is validating you didn't leave it inside the car. Now that I understand why, the lock failures will be a little less annoying.

Yeah, it tries to make locking your fob or PAAK in the car an intentional act. I have done exactly that on occasion. It's a good system imo.
