I think it need only say "Bluetooth connected" on the Ford Pass app for the PAAK to work. In my case the phone can be in my pocket and when I get within about 10 feet of the car the tail lights light up when bluetooth is connected and I'm good to go. My phone doesn't need to be held by me for this to work. I suspect each phone model will be different.
I agree it should work that way and often does, but when I do have the button issue, moving the phone closer almost always solves it.
This said, my phone is also my wallet, and I have a couple of metal credit cards in it which probably isn’t helping anything signal-wise.

Page 81 of the 2022 manual:
My experience is that I need to hold my finger on the lock button for a moment or two.

The next several pages discuss the keypad and its uses.

Yeah, also helps if the pocket the phone or fob is in is close to the door.

I do not use the exterior means of locking the door often since I usually slide my hand up after I open the door and use the interior lock button on the door panel. I am an old dog, so… ??

That said, on the occasions that I have used the 7-8/9-0 combination, that seems to work about 70% of the time. The little lock icon seems to work about as often. ?ā€ā™‚??

Something else I realized today... Since I have my PAAK set up and my phone is always with me in my pocket, I've never tried using the button with just the fob and no phone in proximity. I intentionally left my phone somewhere else and tried this with just the fob in my pocket. In a few tries I did the button behaves flawlessly. I guess I will disable PAAK and keep an eye on this for the next few days.

So you set up PAAK but carry the fob too? If so, maybe they are somehow conflicting with each other.

When I got my new phone a few months back, I never bothered setting up PaaK and haven't missed it at all. The other things still work....fob, door pillar code and backup start code so I am good. ?

After the dealer updates a month ago, I had some things acting funny like the lock and unlock functions etc. I ended resetting the systems by disconnecting the negative LVB cable and it corrected almost everything. Only two items left are bad brake feel and malfunctioning lane centering. (It won't take the set position in the lane like before. It now wants to stay to the right side of the lane for some reason...) ?

Yeah this may be the case. Too early to tell, but I will keep an eye on this now.

Yes I am carrying the fob as well. I don't know if I trust PAAK enough. Don't want to be stuck if my phone dies or if I drop it etc.

You can still usually open the door with your pillar code and then start the car with the backup start code. There was an issue where FordPass updated and somehow that rendered the backup start code invalid. I don't remember the details.....something about re-sending a digital key or something like that. ???

At any rate, except for the one example above......you shouldn't ever be stranded. The phone just doesn't work as well as a key fob. You will sometimes have to pull out your phone and unlock it. Toggle Bluetooth off and on. Make sure FordPass is running etc. Ford sent me a list of things that I should do to make PaaK work. It was pretty funny. I said "Having trouble with Phone as a Key?" Helpful Hints. Then a list of 6 or 7 things that I should do to make it work more reliably. I just smiled because the best solution for me is to carry the fob. My pants aren't that tight that a fob offends anybody....:)

Posting an update in case anyone is interested: disconnected PAAK, that did not affect how lock touch button behaves whatsoever. Still experiencing long delay and the need to push multiple times before it locks the car, very annoying. I guess I am destined to visiting a dealer soon. Very happy with the car otherwise (3 weeks/500 miles).

I came here for this exact reason. I've noticed it's about a 3-5 second delay and then it works every time. It is weird that there is the delay since every other vehicle I've owned locks immediately when you push the outside lock button. I'm fine with the delay overall and the walk away feature works, so I'm not really concerned...but it is weird lol

Yeah same other than in my case the delay is more like 12-15 seconds, which makes the icon even more unusable. I've had multiple cars with this feature, worked every time without any delays.

The walk away feature does work but call me paranoid but I kind of like to make sure the car is locked before I start walking away. I've been using this weird 7/8-9/0 combination to lock the car, planning to visit a dealer and see if they have any thoughts.

The lock button has never worked for me. I just use paak lock unless I don’t want to disturb. Since I always have my fob I can lock with that. I have had blue cruise decide driving on the white dotted line was ok which was annoying because the of the bumping of the reflectors.

Revisiting this dated thread in case anyone is interested in how this has evolved... I took my car to a dealer for whatever that battery safety update was, and the dealer said they installed some other new software as well. The lock button worked seamless ever since. Sometimes it requires two touches (may be my clumsy fat finger), but usually it works from the very first try on all four doors. The dealer acted like they knew about the issue. I was skeptical initially but somehow this did get resolved - very happy!!
