Mach E or VW Id.4

One other vehicle you might want to consider if you have this year is the volvo XC40 recharge p8. It's price is a little more (only a couple thousand) than a similar spec mach e, but not as expensive as some of the other EV options. I haven't test driven Volvo's, so can't say for sure if it's worth the small bump in price.

Thinking of other options, the Polestar 2 is worth a look if you live close enough to one of their stores. It has a lot of similarities to the features and build of the XC40 and they seem to be offering better incentives than Volvo so far this year. In addition, they are available for delivery within weeks.

I think someone just mentioned this as well but the stuff on the dealer websites isn't really valid, some are like in-shipment to other customers, it's weird how Ford lists those in inventory.

If you want it by the end of 2021 there is almost a 0% chance you'd be able to get a Mach-E by ordering. You'd have to stalk inventory and maybe get a cancellation or demo

You're not counting the back log though. There's going to be a whole bunch of unfulfilled 2021 orders dumped into that 2022 queue. If you ordered today, based on the Ford website it says 24+ weeks (most likely well more than 24 now).

Even if it's 24, that's January 14th.

Isn't the XC40 a fair amount smaller than the MME?

I am over 65 and am anxiously awaiting my MME to be deliver hopefully by the end of the calendar year. I was thinking originally of buying a PHEV but since my wife has an ICE Acura RDX, I reasoned that a BEV would be handy for most of our driving 90+ percent of the time. I wasn't that aware of the VW ID.4 but the Ford MME caught my eye and the design, range and fun to drive reviews convinced me to order. Just my thoughts.

MME won, but I wouldn’t fault anyone for the (snooze) ID4–it was sorta kinda close.

At the end of the day, the MME is a more purpose-built EV for Ford and symbolizes a VERY large risk for the company vs. VW who is still “atoning” for diesel-gate.

and I personally felt that in the attention to detail Ford gave to the MME. I’m proud of what they did and want to support it with a wickedly hot automobile.

but ID4 is definitely a more “traditional” SUV and will probably be “smoother” transition for some on the road. This could be important for many people.

I would say a lot of the issues with the mach-e are predominantly due to software rather then mechanical ones. Ford needed to do far more testing in this regards before release and not have existing owners as doing it for them.

The id.4 also has its share of software and interface quirks VW has a lot o software growing pains but these where during the launch of id.3 which didn't make it over to these shores so the id.4 has started on a better footing. In the same way I suspect the f-150 lightning will benefit from all the lessons learned with the mach-e.

As to which is best a lot will come down to personal preference, looks are always subjective but I wouldn't class either as lookers IMO, while both have pros and cons in regards to packaging layout. One nice thing with the id.4 is the 3 years free EA charging so even if you don't plan on road tripping but have a EA charger not to far way from your home that could be a nice bonus.

One negative I do have in regards to the id.4 is that the USA model has been bean countered and a lot of the worthwhile options it has in other markets such as heat pump, adaptive suspension, hud are not available on the USA model . I am assuming that its sister audi q4 e-tron will instead still get those options on these shores as a way to differentiate. Overall I prefer the q4 interior a lot better vs the id.4 and mach-e just for having a more traditional layout and actual physical hvac controls over the haptic touch / screen based controls everyone else seems to have gone for

So if you are in no rush it may be worth a wait to try the q4 and compare it with the id.4 & mach-e, and while your waiting mas well add the Hyundia Ioniq 5 / Kia EV6 to the list which have a leg up on the competition by using a 800v architecture.

ID4 is a great car but the NA model has been discontented a bit too much for me.

- no 3d camera. Disqualifying for my wife.
- cheaper feel even with top end leather.
- AWD not available. This may have changed.
- not a fan of charge port location.
- just bit more bouncy.
- Local VW dealer gave my wife the creeps.

Still great car can't go wrong with it. German over engineering.

I hadn't noticed the id.4 being more bouncy, but then I only had a short test drive on good roads... and the mach-e being bouncy is one of the things I expect less of for a >40k vehicle.

AWD is supposed to be available starting in October (orderable now I think, but can't test drive it or get exact specs last I checked).

We were spoiled with the Bolt. So unless you get the ID.4 AWD (which isn't even out yet) or really don't care about acceleration/speed, you might be disappointed with the ID.4. The Bolt was a fun car to drive but the MME takes it even a step further.

The ID.4 also doesn't have lane centering or an option for self-drive. You can also upgrade the MME for more range. Given that they're both around the same price point and qualify for $7500, though, the MME wins hands down. If you're worried about the issues, it sounds like a lot of them were early on. Now it's mainly software issues that should be ironed out with OTA updates.

The xc40 is small but not that small. It has 20.7 not 14.6.

Ford has never designed a system to hide its emissions being 40 times higher than what they submitted to regulators, so that's kind of a plus for the MME...

That makes more sense. I shopped the XC60 when I leased my Infiniti QX50. The XC60, QX50, and MME are all very close in size/interior. The MME takes the title in cargo space with the frunk.
