Planning a trip to the UK this summer, and thinking it would be fun to rent a Mach E. Does anyone have any advice or experience? My quick google show low availability and much higher prices over other EVs. Trip will be about two weeks; flying into LHR but spending most of my time in the Birmingham area; happy to collect the vehicle in that region if that makes more sense. Is this a practical plan?

Look at Enterprise, used to do a load of work for them investigating fraudulent & exaggerated claims against them and so know their area managers have them as company cars and that they also rent them out.

Unless you are using a private rental car like Turo where you select the actual vehicle, or the agency specifically says a model is guaranteed, don’t ever plan a trip with the expectation of getting a specific vehicle model. You might not even get something in the same vehicle class you booked.

So you always get the vehicle pictured in the UK even though it says “or similar”?
Don’t be ridiculous, the picture’s the example of the car which is available, they picture an MME you get an MME.

LOL, I'd get one of the stellar EVs that we can't get in the US!

Personally I would rent an ICE car over an EV in the UK if you are going to be reliant on public charging. Loads of chargers that’s not the issue, the issue is sky high prices per kWh, many are upwards of 70p to 90p which is over $1.20!! While petrol and diesel is more expensive over in the uk my back of a fag packet maths says anything over 40-50p a kWh is going to more expensive and you don’t get public charging in the UK for that!!!

Your screenshot shows £2313 for the Mach-e compared to £288 for the Mercedes.

Maybe not "dodgy", but I'd go with the Mercedes at those prices.

Do you really want to spend your vacation time looking for a charger and waiting in line for it to be free? As much as I like my EV, I would much rather spend my vacation time relaxing than worrying about where I am going to get my next charge. And remember that the rental company will want it topped off before you return it, so be sure you have reliable access to a charger close to the airport and give yourself plenty of time to recharge before turning it in. And lastly, lots of back country roads in the UK are way too small for even the Mach-e. I've driven some roads in Wales and Cornwall where both mirrors on my compact SUV were scraping the hedgerows on both sides of the car.

Oh, CameraCarl, you no longer wait for chargers in UK unless you try to find busy spots with limited chargers, it’s just not like that anymore here.

Charge stations are like horsesh*t, they’re absolutely everywhere😂

And country roads? I’ve just done 125,000 miles all over the UK, high roads, low roads, backlanes etc and this is just not a real issue.

And all rentals need realistically refuelled to broadly the same as it started out.

Don’t frighten the OP unnecessarily, if I were he I’d just rent a Mach-e, don’t worry and enjoy it.

Once again……….the pictures are the example of cars on offer, they weren’t like for like quotes for like for like rentals, pick-up times/places, mileages etc etc

If you want quotes on the vehicles pictured you’d have to run them through the rental company.

I still say renting the same car you own while on vacation, is the same as eating at McDonalds every where you travel.

You're on vacation, out of country, change things up, try new things! The Mach-E will be here when you get back. 😁

That said, it is your vacation, do what makes you happy, not what any net posts say. :p

I thought of that as well for a trip a month ago - it was not worth the exuberant rate hikes for an EV nor the difficulty of planning out charge stops through England's north and Scotland. In Iceland, I also considered renting an available Mach-E, but the rates were 60% more than a Mitsubishi Outlander.

Considering the weather we had in Iceland, the Outlander was the better bet (bottom photo). 100 km/h side gusts, hours after a snowstorm, passed 3 separate accidents - a head-on (by a Telsa Model 3, others driving off the road, etc).

Yes, the roads were that empty - late March & October are by far the best times to travel:

Sounds like a nice trip. Just a thought…unless you really need a car everyday, why not take the train from London to Birmingham? My experience with trains in Europe has been good. Personally I find it relaxing to let the engineer do the driving while I just sight see. When you’re in Birmingham and really need a car to visit areas not reasonably accessible by public transport, then rent the car. You might find this a more cost effective way to travel. Again, it’s just a thought. It’s your vacation to enjoy as you wish! Don’t forget to send postcards back to the Virginia colony!!
