I had my battery pack replaced with a new one under warranty, Ford paperwork says the "part" cost $30,400. This was two months ago.
Yeah. $63k is BS.

Thanks. That is super helpful. I have the direct quote with the cost of the part in the quote. The insurance guy had a similar estimate to your 30,400, but still was not worth it to the insurance company to fix since they get $10K in salvage. I’ll call another dealer. There was no labor cost since that was covered by the recall to fix the HVBJB recall anyway.

was your battery extended range?

I can understand this if a replacement battery costs more than a new car. The ICE equivalent would be a new engine and transmission which would be less likely to total a late model vehicle plus you have used or rebuilt replacement options that EVs lack.

OP had an unfortunate accident but the unrepairability of EV batteries is the real villain and are not unique to the Mach-E. I hope the OP doesn’t give up on EVs as they have so much going for them. In the meantime someone will buy the salvage Mach-E at auction, locate a used Mach-E battery and put the car back on the road.
Add shutterbug’s hood or front faring and someone will have themselves quite the Franken-Mach-e

You can look that part number up on Ford's parts website and look at the cost of the part at each dealer. They set their own pricing. One dealer near me has a near 100% markup over MSRP on all their parts. While another dealer has them under MSRP.

Tesla is replacing older Model 3 packs that fail with LFPs and the cost is $7K plus labor. This is direct from a Tesla source.

$63K is ridiculous and my guess is dealer markup on parts and labor. I suspect out of warranty Mach-E will get LFP packs that have slightly less capacity but cost $5-10K. Heck, a new Pentastar engine replacement cost $10K in today’s dollars.

IME insurance companies are incentivized to total a vehicle as the salvage is then theirs to resell . My AMG was recently totaled and that brought me to a 2023 GTPE.
Sorry about your battery - and your MME being totaled. I wonder how many accidents reported here were NOT totaled by insurance.

If OP is being honest, please tell us who the dealer is. We should be keeping a "Black List" of dealers on this website that are either "Sharks", dishonest, or have way too high markups an Cars and Parts.

Just my 2 cents...

In the height of the Craziness (July 2021), my dealer (Mall of GA Ford) in Buford, GA, sold me the car for MSRP and after my request, provided me with a 2nd Key Fob at no additional cost (Prior to Ford making it mandatory) since initially PAAK was REALLY BAD. Since those early days PAAK is 99.9% perfect for me!!! We normally only hear Negative Reviews of Dealers (as we should) so just thought I'd give a positive shout out to my Dealer.

Took the car to the dealer last week and they found batter acid on the back side of the battery pack and said the car was not drivable.
I assume by "battery acid" they mean electrolyte, but if you hit something hard enough to break open a battery cell and cause an electrolyte leak, you'd know it and would likely have had a fire. Maybe they found a coolant leak....but if the dealer actually told you they found battery acid, I'd throw the BS flag right away and find another dealer. These batteries don't have "battery acid" like you see in a 12v battery.

Yeah. I had the same thought. I assume if I really have a bad cell, the battery management system should know that. The car was 100% drivable. Something is not right. Hard to find a Ford dealer with EV experience. The dealer I thought had the most experience in Boston area seems to be not great. If anyone has a preferred dealer in New England let me know.

The only fluid in the battery pack is coolant for thermal cooling and heating of the battery pack.

There is always a $40K 2022 Model Y.
Heck, with Tesla's latest price cuts a new (2024) Model Y LR AWD is less than $50,000, then subtract the $7,500 federal tax credit. That equals about $42,000 before taxes etc. The tax credit is now available upfront. Of course the Model Y is a plain "Jane" common car, mundane interior and the build quality varies. These are some of the reasons Tesla has had to cut the price so much to unload them.

Most EVs seem to have a higher ground clearance than the Mach-e. Tesla Model Y = 6.8 inches; VW I.D4 AWD = 6.8 & RWD = 6.0; with the Mach-e = 5.7 inches.

It is scary to think that what should be a minor ding could total a car. Still, I would get a second or even third opinion. Fluid leaking from the HV battery pack could just be coolant.

$40K MSRP makes a lot more sense.

lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles (EVs) contain a liquid electrolyte.
