I remember Ford promising to make 50,000 MMEs this year. I assume that was for global distribution? If Ford sells maybe 35,000 in the US, that doesn’t seem like a lot. I wonder where the breakeven is on the investment, if it’s even possible to calculate such a thing.
In Jan, Ford said it will make Mache locally in China. I read that the first one already rolled off the assembly line. So the 50000 from Mexico is only US+Canada + Europe.

It seems Ford also produced 6700 Mache in March. I think it might increase volume if demand is strong or it needs more ZEV credits.

it's too early to know for sure exactly how 2021 will play out but we know 2020 didn't go anything like Ford originally envisioned. Because of not just COVID-19 issues but other issues (the chip shortage which is also from other causes like a plant fire in Asia, etc.), 2021 is looking like it's not going to go as planned either. :(

Here's another perspective that could be affecting sales, I'm a retired engineer. I drove the Mach e and liked the ride, the button/switch controls for mirrors & locks, having car play, Xm radio, steering wheel controls wheels/tires interior and other items way more than a Tesla Y. However after watching a few u-tube videos and being on this forum reading about all the issues owners are having particularly with the tech, I decided not to order one at this time. Take a step back and read this forum as a new perspective buyer to EV's, it's a bit scary. While some people don't mind being BETA testers and developers, many do. When I purchase a $50K+ vehicle I expect everything to work like it was intended. It's Fords job to develop the vehicle not mine; I just want to drive and enjoy all the cool tech. I'm not trying to belittle the Mach-e, I did like the car, I'm just pointing out there are probable many people like myself who find all these issues totally unacceptable. While I really want an EV and really like this one, if I don't see Ford getting on these problems and fixing them very quickly this car is off my list.

I believe expectations of high inflation in the coming years drive purchases of cars and other expensive items. It makes perfect sense to make large purchases now while interest rates are still low and prices haven't skyrocketed yet.

Firstly, I feel MME is surprisingly lacking any serious issues. Seriously, it's their first EV, first year, totally new design, lots of unknows, and I still haven't seen any issues (other than FordPass and P&C). We need to give Ford a credit for amazingly good job done.
Secondly, it's unreasonable to expect any new technology to come up defect free and polished no matter the price. You can wait for another 10 years when EVs become a commonplace and manufacturers figured out all the issues. Your best bet will probably be Toyota/Lexus as they prefer designing boring but trouble free vehicles. Your worst bet will probably be German cars as they are often overspec'ed with lots of potential for problems.

I wonder if the chip shortage is the reason for the drop in sales for March? It makes me nervous that cars scheduled for the next few months will be delayed.
I believe so. I have had my MachE ordered for over three weeks without anything showing past the "order is placed"

That’s impossible if you factor in the R&D cost. Ford made a massive investment in electrification. Now granted, you can only attribute a portion of that to the MME, but I think Ford must be years away from turning a profit on that investment.
Ford publicly stated the Mach E is profitable from car #1. If they aren't, then multiple executives would be in prison for securities fraud

They don't have to pay for the R&D costs immediately upon launch, those costs are amortized over the life of the car (and the Mach E won't be the only car that comes out of the R&D budget)

I think March early March was when the recall hit and they slammed on the brakes for deliveries. They more or less lost a week in scrambling to get that all fix. Plus the great Texas snow storm from Feb I think slow down things as well as those trains had to pass threw a state with no power and was a mess for a week.

Depends how they define profitable. If profitable only says what it cost to build the car and get it to customers then hell yeah they are doing that but there is no way in hell they are recovering their full R&D cost. Like you said they are going to spread that cost out across multiple cars and I am also willing to bet a lot of the R&D is just written off as a lost to shield the Mach E from looking bad. You have to love capital loses.

I did’t mean to upset anyone, I was ready to order until I started reading on this forum. I do like the vehicle. I would like to have some actual data on percent of vehicles with issues as reading on here it seems like a very high number which I’m sure is miss leading.

If you base your vehicle purchasing decisions on the percentage of people in forums with complaints, you will never buy any type of vehicle.

That’s a valid point, but for better or worse I’ve gotten in the habit of reading reviews before about any purchase. Many owners on this forum are a bit frustrated about issues seemingly not getting addressed. That worried me, I would very much like to see more stories about how great the car is w/o issues.

But that's the problem. In any forum, the people with issues are going to be a lot more vocal than the people without issues. I can tell you all about the lack of rewind functionality in SXM because it annoys me and I want it to be changed. But I'm not going to spend a lot of time listing all the things that are working great. It's just human nature.

wait there's something with the SiriusXM in the car that you don't like? 🤔

Not sure you are reading enough of the forum then, Ford for sure is taking notes and addressing the issues. It takes time to identify, rework and release fixes, any of the major ones already have a dealer update; the others will be addressed in upcoming OTA's.

Some of them are longer term fixes that are generally cosmetic in nature, take the reported screen buzz, that's not something that will be addressed for a while if ever in MY21. I could go on with that one but there are a few threads already on it. I would't pass on the MME due to it for example etc.

I feel that many folks look at only the negatives for reasons not purchase as a way to internally process decisions. Forums can lean heavily on the negative side as many take to them when they only are having issues, not to tell us how great things are. Many happy owners enjoying the MME and not hanging out on the forum after the purchase. I just happen to like to contribute to the forum and enjoy hearing the good stuff and take note of the bad with knowledge from the forum that Ford will address it.

The MME is no different from other similar purchases, we just don't live in a prefect world.
