I may sell or trade in my MME in a few weeks as my new MME was just built. ETA of 8/9-15. I have auto updates programmed but wonder if it would be more prudent to make an appointment and get the dealer to install the update. Any thoughts?

Open recalls only prevent new vehicles from being sold by the dealer.

You are fine.

If the recall has not been complied with the dealership cannot sell it to anyone until it has been done.

You can sell your vehicle to anyone without doing the update.
The update will show on your Carfax report until such time as it is completed, entered into the Ford system, and processes through to impact Carfax.

I just sold my 2021, to a dealer, without doing the recall. They are doing it. Trading it would have zero impact, dealer does it and gets paid for it.

If you do make an appointment at a dealer, make sure you get paperwork to give to a buyer that shows the recall work was performed, since Carfax will possibly show it as not yet performed.

This isn’t true. Like I said above, that only applies to new vehicles:

Can Dealerships Sell Cars With Open Recalls
In short, yes dealerships can sell a car with a unfixed recall, as long as they deem the car “used”. If you’re going to buy a new car, though, the dealership is not legally allowed to sell it to you if it has an open recall.”

That is only correct for a new car dealership selling a new car. Used cars can be sold with recalls, unless state law forbids it. https://www.motorbiscuit.com/is-it-illegal-to-sell-used-vehicles-with-open-recalls/
Fair enough. But the sales team at my Ford dealership told me that they are required by Ford to perform any recalls prior to reselling a vehicle.

And to underscore that point I was told that the '21 Powerboost I had just had the first oil change done on a couple of weeks before trading in on my Lightning was going to not only have to have the windshield wiper and trailer module recall performed, but that they were required by Ford to have another oil change done before they could sell it.

So in broader generic terms I would agree to what you've said. But apparently some manufacturers have their own rules.

Big difference between legal requirements and a manufacturer's requirements.

If the dealership is going to resell the car as "Ford Certified Pre-Owned", then they have to do certain things to meet that.

Or this could be the first time ever that people on a forum were better informed than “the sales team.” ?

A few cars ago, the owner of the local dealership where I was buying called my salesman into his office. The salesman was told to know everything about the vehicle because I would likely know it and not be happy if the salesman had incorrect info.

On my current MME, I knew it had arrived before the salesperson did. I had been tracking it and knew it had been dropped off after hours.

I spent 8 years doing advertising for car dealerships.

Salespeople aren’t taught to know all the correct information.

They’re taught to say incorrect information, but to do it “with confidence!”

My favorite recently was car shopping with my mom. She was looking at a Lincoln Corsair (a vehicle I knew nothing about). I spent 5 minutes looking it up online.

We looked at a complete base model. The salesman said “they all come with 360 cameras.” Which my 5 minutes of research revealed they don’t. He pushed back, I’m sure they do. So I click the camera button…. Read view only. He still pushed…… must be one of the settings. I said it would have cameras on the side mirrors and up front. He proceeded to get out and look at the front to find the camera. He concluded….. “they must have just hidden the cameras real well.” My mom rolls her eyes……
