My 21 ID.4 had 3.0-3.1 mi/kWh efficiency at 70mph. My MME AWD ER gets around the same efficiency but the battery is much larger so range will be better. 2 years later I still get around 270-280 miles on the highway which I accomplished a few weekends ago driving across FL back and forth in a day (rocket launch on the space coast + Tampa event)

I've owned more efficient EVs - Model 3 RWD (4.0-4.2mi/kWh), Model Y LR (3.6 mi/kWh), and BMW i4 (3.7 mi/kWh) and in reality only the i4 and Model Y had more range due to aerodynamics.
I was getting 3.4 today. Mach-e was usually around 2.7

The rear drum brakes on the ID4 immediately took it off my list when I was car shopping. Inexcusable on a "modern" car that weighs as much as BEVs do.

Not sure ICE is outdated , the perfect combo right now is Hybrid. I think Toyota is considering going hybrid only on an article I read yesterday. Ford said their 3 row EV SUV that was cancelled will go hybrid as well.
The biggest issue I continue to read is just that the hybrid owners don't charge that battery. They just use it as a ICE car. I guess it makes them "feel better" at purchase but are just too lazy to take literally 5 seconds to plug her in after work. I guess this Generation behind me (I call them the "Door Dash" Gen), those willing to pay 20% more instead of getting their a** off the couch and run to the store are just not my "cup of tea". Damn, I really turning into the "get off my lawn kid" guy when I re-read this. But "F" it, that's how I see it.

As a kid in college I totally agree with this. My peers are some of the laziest people I've ever met.

You'd mentioned the suspension on the ID. Does it have a MagneRide type suspension?

As much as I am laughing at this, you are spot on!

No. In Europe, the ID.4 does have a different type of adaptive suspension, optional I think. It is mechanical rather than magnetic. But in America, they only offered the cheap, non-adaptive option. Still rides much smoother than the Mustang.

Those hybrid plugins need enough range so that it is worth the bother of charging. Some were pretty anemic.

It really isn't a big deal - the rear wheels get most of their braking power from regenerative braking. The drums are rarely used - if you had discs back there, they would rust out and require service.

Some do plug in, some don't. It is hard to generalize. We have neighbors who do plug in.

Not in the US. EU cars do. The suspension is similar in initial "softness" but it's damped more heavily so it doesn't have that weird bouncy effect the non magneride cars do

Everyone has different opinions so all good here. I currently have a GTPE and a Lightning. I was going to get a car for my daughter I drove the ID4. I was very very disappointed. The handling/braking was pretty bad. Manual seat adjustment in a $50k car!

I don’t like the regular Mache suspension so it wins there.

I will still get her an EV at some point. I have been eying the VW Buzz….which I think is supercool…but I don’t think she would feel the same.

I agree with the braking with id.4. Weird pedal feel, there's a lot of power but it's not a super responsive feeling. The manual seat adjustment is dumb at this price point. The base id4 is a little too basic IMO.

I've driven just about everything in this price range. Top 3 picks are ID.4 (2024+), mach-e and XC40.

In a perfect world I would've gotten the volvo i think, but it's driver assist is quite plainly garbage and it's screen is a little small, but it drives so so nice and is so refined.

Congrats on the new car, and thanks for the comparisons between the two.

In late 2021 we test drove the ID.4 and the Mach-E, fully anticipating we were going to pick the ID.4 due to lower price. But then we test drove both cars, and the ID.4 was both less exciting (expected), and more importantly, the tech/center console software was literally unusable. We couldn't figure out how to do many functions while driving it. Worst tech I have ever seen in a car. So we went Mach-E, have been super happy, and never looked back.

But with improved software it looks like the ID.4 is competitive again - just depends on what you're looking for in a car.

Nope. Not adaptive nor air nor magnetic. Honesty it’s nothing special. Ioniq5/EV6/Lyriq are the about the same ride quality and I test drove a 23 ID.4 when I owned an i4 with adaptive suspension and was underwhelmed (back in 21 I was impressed because all other EVs rode like sh*t).

iX with air suspension is my benchmark for a luxury EV ride quality.

Congrats on the upgrade/sidegrade/downgrade to the ID4.

If VW were to offer the ID7 Sport Tourer.
Why does Europe get the cool ones?
