IIHS is going to really ruin the hands-free experience with these requirements. Everything will have to be extra strict to pass. So much for auto resume. Automakers will have to add a camera to watch your hands and will beep at you if you take a drink or pick up anything. No automatic lane changes.

BTW, the IIHS is why the new seat belt warnings are so annoying.

This calls for a Rant!?

I am sorry... I think the report from IIHS and especially the reporting from CNN is crap.

The headline from CNN implies the IIHS in some way tested the driving capability of these systems... but no... they are only interested in the "Nanny" function of the systems...

CNN implies the ratings have something to do with how the systems drive... but the IIHS did not rate that. CNN should more accurately be called the OOCNN (Out of Context News Network) in this case.

That’s a good point. I’d love to see some kind of objective test of how well all the systems worked. How well the follow the car in front, acceleration/deceleration, lane centering accuracy in various conditions, etc.

It would be very hard to do but likely quite eye opening. Right now we mostly have people’s subjective opinions if that. How many people have used more than 2 or 3 of the systems?

What a joke of a story. The biggest issue on the road today is shitty drivers. Why not talk about speeding, failure to use blinkers, rolling through stop signs, cutting corners into your lane at intersections, texting, smoking pot, drinking, reading, applying makeup, sleeping, tailgating, not checking blind spots before changing lanes. There have been 3 head on collisions in 6 months by house. Wife’s been literally run off the road twice in 10 years on that 3 mile stretch. Nothing special about that road in my opinion other than it’s used by travelers from out of town.

Their seatbelt requirement for usage is an example of "design by committee" -- we all know it's IMPOSSIBLE to plug in a seatbelt and sit on it. Or unbuckle and put it behind you.

As someone who is not that much of an idiot it has literally never occurred to me to see what Blue Cruise does if I takeoff my seatbelt while driving. Why would I ever do that?

i’m glad people test for this stuff but sometimes I don’t think I would be fit to figure out some of the things that need testing. I’m not crazy enough.

Anybody else notice that SuperCruise garnered three Poor ratings, but Marginal overall? Whereas BC has just one Poor rating, but Poor overall?
Yeah, seems strange. But maybe the categories are weighted?

It only works in gated areas. They probably tested 1.2 as well which is meh. 1.4 is much better at lane holding.

Yeah our overall rating doesn’t match up with the breakdown in categories.

If you ignore the overall, we would actually be close to the best on the list. ?‍♂

I’m guessing a Poor in Safety Features was an automatic fail. But that category seems a bit redundant of other more specific categories like Driver Monitoring, Attention Reminders, and Emergency Procedures where BC scores better. Weird.

yes... all part of the crap rubric that the IIHS used.

That might actually be one of my only use cases for hands free - if I'm hot and want to take off my sweater/sweatshirt. It would be only for a few seconds though. Then my hands would be right back on the wheel with my seat belt buckled.

My guess is this is a direct reaction to videos some people posted with their Teslas years ago of them riding in the back seat with no one in the driver's seat. The problem is, these rules will become no more effective than all the warning stickers we get on everything so companies can avoid lawsuits from idiots that do stupid things (or worse yet, the cancer warnings in California). People will just come up with more stupid things to do and the rules for these systems will just become more and more complicated, likely resulting in more and more bugs being introduced from the complexity. And because IIHS has an over-sized influence, all the automakers will essentially be forced to follow the madness.

I agree. I keep my hands on the wheel at basically all times. BC means I can quickly grab a water bottle in the cupholder and open it without issue. But other than trying just to see once I have no interest in not keeping my hands at the wheel. Just seems so much safer.

Automatic emergency braking is a thing too, but you shouldn’t rely on it. That’s the best comparison I can come up with.

Consumer Reports rating Blue Cruise and Super Cruise so highly was one of the reasons I went with a Mach-E. While I liked my kludgy 2019 RAV4 ADAS, I have really been happy with how smoothly Blue Cruise segways between levels of ADAS.
