While I understand cross-shopping these (I did), the VW still seems better than many run-of-the-mill ICE SUVs. I know many who would be fine with it, and would even prefer it.

It's just not the statement the MME is. Why settle for less.

I wonder why none of these reviews ever mention that the cargo floor of the Mach-E can also be lowered. So that in turn makes me wonder whether the Mach-E really does have less cargo space than the ID4. ?

I have my cargo floor in the lower position by default, just to give the dog enough headroom. ?

The only reason that I can see for the upper position is for when the rear seats are folded down then overall the surface is more flat. Am I missing something? The optional floor mat fits better in the lower position, it will hold more weight without bending, and as mentioned there is more room in height.

For a car that has been seen universally as a bit of a disappointment, Iā€™m flabbergasted by how many of these id4s I see on the road. For every one MME I see about 20 ID4s. The electrify america stations are packed with these cars. Not sure whatā€™s going on here. Is it the low price thatā€™s moving them out? Or maybe itā€™s a chip shortage affecting other brands? These VWs seem like they are selling like hot cakes

The opinion of automotive critics frequently does not track with the opinion of the driving public.

Volkswagen is offering a $7500 incentive to lease the ID.4, which brings the base model's capital cost down to ~$32,000. On top of that, they're providing free charging through Electrify America for three years. They're also suggesting dealers add incentives for leases.

We've been bouncing between choosing a Mach-E and an ID.4. Considering how impossible it is to find a Mach-E to test drive, we're leaning toward the ID.4 simply because we were able test drive one and we didn't hate it. I haven't been able to find a Ford dealer who has a Mach-E available for test driving within an 8-hour (one-way) drive. Regardless of the popularity, I need to put my butt in the seat before I'll purchase.

I would much prefer the Mach-E, mostly for its range and supposed sporty feel, but availability to test drive and total cost are pushing us to its only competitor (in our objective+subjective determination), the VW ID.4.

Surprised you are having that much trouble finding an MME to check out. Are you in the Valley? We are having a little meet up a week from Saturday in Scottsdale. Check out the post in the Southwest forum.

We live in NoAZ (almost no EV dealers up here), but have been in SoCal for the last week and calling dealers here. I'm surprised at the apparent lack of dealer-owned testers too, but... Haven't had any luck. We haven't been in the market for more than about a month, and we're not going to purchase right away, so it's not a done deal just yet.
Thanks for the note about the meet-up!

The ID.4 also has the raised cargo floor, which can also be lowered. My understanding is so the cargo floor is level with the rear seat backs, when they are lowered.

I bought an ID.4 as a filler car while I wait for one of my orders to be delivered - Mach-E eAWD 2022 in Cyber Orange, Model Y Red/White, Rivian R1S (yeah... 2023), Kia EV6 (on waitlist).

After a month of ownership I see why it's so popular and I've met many ID.4 (and Mach-E) owners at EA stations

1) It is actually available (in limited numbers) at $39K MSRP plus delivery charge unlike the Mach-E where I only see Selects and markup is $5K or higher. More importantly the ME configurations I see available are not what I want. Also Ford has shipped majority of the Mach-Es to Europe it seems.

2) Three years of free EA charging. I've saved $80 (180+ kW) in charging in my first month of ownership.

3) The ride is smooth. The Mach-E is fun and sporty but is pretty aggressive (I test drove the Premium RWD in the middle mode) - from braking to acceleration. I call the ID.4 a couch on wheels.

4) The base ID.4 (RWD) has a range of 260 miles but in reality closer to 300. This car is slightly cheaper than the base Select RWD which has a range of 230 (but in reality probably 250+). To get similar range you need to spend almost $10K more on the Premium with the extended range battery

5) There's more rear cargo space in the ID.4 than Mach-E (also see banana box tests). It's very much a RAV4 replacement. That is a positive and negative. See below.

6) Many owners mentioned they like the anonymous style of the ID.4 and specifically did not want something that stuck out like a Tesla or Mach-E. Shrug. This is opposite reason I'd buy a car...

ID.4 has negatives like a horribly laggy infotainment systems, no frunk, meh EV acceleration (still better than ICE cars), and a glitchy coolant pump that I've at least two dozen reports on.

I personally don't feel a strong attachment to the car. It's functional and drives so well... I will miss the comfortable ride but I'm not looking for a family SUV. Value-wise it smokes the Select RWD. I think Ford should dump the Select configuration or just sell an AWD only version.

Yeah, I have the Acura RDX with the touch pad controller, and I think it's great, yet every damned reviewer said it's too hard to figure out, too fiddly, etc. It's literally "plunk your finger down and the orange highlight appears."

I won't even look at the ID.4. I have had a lot of VWs in the past, and each one had massive problems of stuff that just shouldn't have been an issue. I was "this close" to swearing them off forever, and then DieselGate happened, and that completely pushed me over the edge. Incompetence I can get over. Outright intentional deceit, nope.
My wife has the RDX with the touch pad as well and I hate it. I feel that I need to look at the screen too long, especially in Apple CarPlay mode. My Sync 3 touchscreen on my F150 is is much easier, and safer to use IMO.

In CarPlay modeā€”when the damned thing even worksā€”I completely agree. The shuffling around trying to find the path for the tap targets is awful.

It's not a massive loss for the ID.4 by any stretch. Really it's a damn competitive ride compared to what you'd get in a RAV4 / CRV and it has a few things the MME doesn't.

But, it's definitely not a statement.
