As I understand it, "Build date" and VIN assignment marks the beginning of the production saga.
"Scheduled for Production week of" (from https://www.ford.com/buy/manage.html?reservationId=xxxx) is (supposedly) the week your car is intended to begin production. Maybe. Or at least when it enters the queue for consideration. I had a heck of a lot of scheduled dates go drifting by. Mine settled at 12/6.

My VIN, OTOH, I got from my dealer on 9/9. Couldn't get my window sticker for quite a while, but the VIN, waaay early.

The "In Production" date (from https://shop.ford.com/vehicleordertracking/status/?vin=xxxxx) is highly likely to be when your car started it's journey through the factory. Mine is solid at 12/11.

Signs of progress appeared: Modules lit up. I was able to request activation (but no one has pressed the button).

The estimated delivery date (also from the vehicle tracking status) is seemingly random. Mine was at 12/31 for quite a while -- all the way into the first week of 2022. Then it slipped to some time in Feb (IIRC), then to 1/31, then to 1/30, and now, the horrifying TBD. TBD! I think all the cars should have TBD, btw; more accurate than the dates they post.

We're pretty aware of the steps you outline; heck, I ordered mine in May, and have been on this forum for a good part of the time since, watching with the occasional happy occurrence of someone getting their car, and the much more frequent moans of those who haven't, for reasons that were often not apparent.

I made no such implication that Ford had abandoned any "builds", though.
Glad to confirm that. This: "....Ford stopped building 2021MY and are now building 2022MY...." says "stopped building". One (or...me) could easily interpret that as "Yeah, we're done, put those in the scrap heap". Inserting "new" after "building" would have made your meaning crystal clear. Sorry for panicking.

That said, my car is in some kind of boneyard, what with the TBD delivery and my dealer telling me it's "going to storage". No reason given. He was looking into it, but haven't heard back yet.

note: Ford seems to have begun building several thousand 2022MY MME in the 3 weeks of January and whether they are getting all microchips (and being "completed" ahead of 2021 orders that are still "incomplete") seem unknown or are inaccessible to outsiders.
Well, we have some data from the forums themselves. One of the things that make us cranky over here is that there are 22MY people who's cars are showing as build complete and shipping has started. There are other 22MY folks who are trapped in the void, however. And maybe it's just my imagination, but IIRC, it seems those whose builds started later, are getting completed first. It's a FIFO queue (or stack)...until they ring the bell, then it's LIFO.

Anyway, waiting for a MME is a hell of a hobby! Keeping me off the streets, in more ways than one.

Wow another slap in our faces ......... this guy orders more many months after all of us (some by over 6 months), gets his car built and well on its way to delivery before all of us. Oh did I mention it's a 22.
There is more than one. I think I noticed a few of them

My 21 no longer has its VIN available., which makes some kind of sense since it allegedly was supposed to be delivered tomorrow. It’s one of those that was taken to an offsite location and then returned to the factory.

Ford's dysfunction continues. along with some people who have had their 01/03 build week cars Built and shipped there is now one user who ahs posted that his car with same build week ahs now gone to chip hold as per dealer VVR. same story as us. build date, in production status, some modules, activate fordpass button, an ETA for the car on the tracker and boom chip hold.

plenty in that forum with no updates since their cars went into In Production mode as well and if compared to us that might meant he same problem for them.

My original order which i cancelled to take up an earlier order date was converted to 2022 and is stuck in same limbo - In production since 01/05 and no movement. (i can follow the status since i have the VIN n order number).

It doesn't look like Ford has any plans to get their act together.

I think the 'In production' vs 'Built' issue is more of a technicality
On the Ford tracker, “in production” includes the time the car is sitting around waiting for space on a KCS train. Only after that is it officially “built.” That’s only for the Ford public tracker. The others are different.

Most of you guys seem to be well beyond such a minor distinction though.

If I read that right, my cars "delivery date of TBD+activation waiting for a button press+moved to storage" may be sort of good news: that it's built, but timing was bad and it's at the back of a to-be-shipped queue. ?

Does anyone really know or we all just guessing as to what is happening?

I was simply commenting on the mechanics of the Ford on-line tracker. What’s happening with your vehicles is another story. The chip shortage seems to have deepened rather than abated. Ford is likely trying not to idle assembly lines, ala Flat Rock and the ICE Mustang. Plus COVID and omicron are making things far worse for manpower with everything and every business (Including KCS and the shipping).

My build week (1/24/21) extended almost a full month with a lot of our cars in assembly for over two weeks. But they were built and not sent off to limbo land. I’m not sure what could be said to you guys at this point that could adequately explain the new territory we find ourselves in.

I have sent @mrlevine multiple tweets detailing the situation and asking for a formal response. I am not really expecting anything out of this, like all the others avenues we have been disappointed at but let's see.
Did you get any response from him?

Quick update for the group, I was contacted by a Karen Jones who is an executive representative for Ford. She said she is going to work with her team and try and get an update for me on my car by Monday.

Again she could simply report back to say that the car is delayed pending microchip hold but wanted to keep everyone in the loop. Also I couldn't tell you what prompted the formal response whether it's all the emails to Ford, their C suite for customer relations, or the new Vehicle service team or tweeting Mike Levine.

And...when you talk to her, can you ask her what it means for a car to be in production and have it's estimated delivery go from some future date to TBD?

@kennethjk and I thank you.
