I just had an OEM windshield replacement on my 2022 CR1. It seems like the real deal as it has the Ford logo, heating wires for the camera & wiper parking, SoundScreen logo, and the IRR logo. However, I noticed when reinstalling the Velcro for my toll tag there's no obvious cutout for the metalized layer in the two spots by the mirror. It was pretty noticeable on my original windshield. I also tried tossing the toll tag on my dashboard the other day and it read correctly, which did not work on the original.

So, what's going on here? Has the layer changed such that it doesn't need cutouts anymore? Or is this some knockoff/defective windshield that doesn't have the layer despite the logo saying it does? I actually prefer this as now I should be able to use my radar detector, but it seems to still have SoundScreen. It's definitely not louder than the original at speed.

Hmm, where did you get this windshield from exactly?

You can test it with the radar detector, just park at the back of a Walmart parking lot facing the door, and move your radar detector between the black area and clear area. If it's metallic IRR you'll see a huge difference in the signal strength.

You can also do the sun warmth test, park so the sun is shining in the windshield and the side window. Move your hand between the windshield and the side window. The side window should feel much hotter in the sun (unless you have ceramic tint). If windshield and side window feel equally hot, then the IRR might not be true.

You can also test by parking in front of a security camera with IR night vision. The IRR windshield will look like a mirror on the camera footage.

It was from Auto Glass Now. They recently bought out a regional chain here in CA, so who knows what the supply chain is. Good idea on those tests. I'll try to do the sun and camera ones in the next day or two. The radar detector test will take me a little longer as I don't have any errands queued up currently.

So far it doesn't seem like there's an IRR layer. Windshield looks exactly the same on my IR security camera as the the truck, which is an old fashioned simple windshield. Tomorrow I should be able to try out the radar detector, and I'll get a pic of the glass label.

I'm wondering if the two part numbers in this thread are a clue. https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/does-this-glass-acoustic-and-have-irr.27094/

Does anyone know if the '23 and '24 models with the lower end windshield still say SoundScreen?

Woah, I never gave this much thought but that's a very clever (and simple) test. Guess my IRR is the real deal (OEM glass). Pardon the mess ?.

To the OP: I've always had to put my toll transponder on my plate (shows up as a black strip at the bottom in this image). Windshield blocked the signal if placed inside the car.

Yes, mine still says Soundscreen on my 23.5. Depending on when my cameras turn on, I see what you see in the window. Typically when my cameras' IR first turn on I see my windows blocked out.

Try scrolling through your feed and see if you notice the same behavior with your cameras as I do.

@sukhoi_584th does your new windshield say IRR in the front left (driver side) corner or not? That should be definitive. But it doesn't seem that you got the correct windshield. Do CR1s come with the IRR windshield standard?

You have to mount the toll tag in the blacked out glass areas next to the mirror. Those areas are RF transparent.

Oh that explains the 80~90 degree temp differences I saw when metering the windshield on those areas

Tried that and it didn't work. One of the staff at the EZ Pass office came outside with a receiver. I moved the transponder all around the windshield, including around the blacked out area and she never got a signal. NH requires a front plate so I'm fine with where it is.

But I don't want to misinform the OP. I'm sure you are correct Jim, I just couldn't get it to work.

That is a good question. You just reminded me, that when I bought my MME, dealer told me that only Premiums and GTs had the IRR windshield.

That’s odd. My EZPass transponder is mounted there and I haven’t had any issues. Maybe Ford’s windshield supplier made changes.

Meh, they are probably looking into ditching the transponders and relying on cameras and AI. That way if you flip off the plate cameras while passing through, they'll know to charge you more ?

Maybe you got a bad transponder. There’s no reason why it shouldn’t work in the black area.

I'm inclined to think that was the case.
