Hi everyone

apologies for asking something that’s undoubtedly been asked a million times before! I finally took delivery of our new MME at the weekend! All fab, but I can’t get my iPhone to start the car. It Unlocks the car but I need the key to start it. I’ve seen on other forums that PAAK doesn’t work in the UK. Is this true? Many thanks in advance!

Yep - PAAK is disabled in the UK, because of this you can also ignore the section in the manual about walk away locking as well ;)

I don't know about any UK specific issues, but where is your phone when you try to start the car? There is a frustrating short range for detection inside the car and that can be a problem if the phone is in a pocket. It works best and most consistently when the phone is on/near the charge pad on the console.

edit: didn't post fast enough, so never mind ;)

They have an even more frustratingly short detection range when Ford don’t fit the Bluetooth module at the factory ?

Thanks for confirming! Do you know why we don’t have paak in the UK? It seems such a great feature. The phone unlocks the car when I walk up close to it. So doesn’t it lock again when you walk away?

Well allegedly it was to do with Insurance groups and Thatcham approvals, but we have called bull ? on that as many other manufacturers have PAAK enabled cars for sale in the UK. We reckoned it was a cost cutting move to not fit the Bluetooth module to the UK variant for various reasons.

I don’t think we’ll ever know the truth to be fair. You can never get a straight or honest answer out of anyone at Ford UK HQ ?

The only way to lock and unlock your car is to:
  • Use the keyless fob (press lock/unlock buttons on fob)
  • Use the keyless fob (leave in your pocket and press door button)
  • Use the PIN keypad on the drivers door
  • Use FordPass app to do a remote lock/unlock - but you have to press and hold a button for 3 seconds in the app and then wait for the car to get the signal via the Ford telematics system.
You say your phone unlocks the car when you walk up to it - I think thats the key that’s doing that ;)

Haha!! Yeah, could be the key! I’m still getting used to all the MME tech!! Many thanks for the info, in a way it’s good to see it confirmed that there’s no PAAK and it’s not just me who can’t figure it out!
