In a typical transmission, there is a pawl that engages a cogged wheel inside the transmission case. It's activated when "PARK" is selected. You may then choose to set the parking brake, a part of the brake system.

Is there a similar system (device) on the mach E... a mechanical lock separate from the parking brake and the electrical system?

It sure feels like it. When you go to park without activating the parking break, do you not notice the slight rocking forward/backward as it settles into the pawl?

Don't have one yet. I'm curious about it. My drive has a sight grade to it.

Ah, no worries.

When parking on a grade, the vehicle may automatically engage the parking brake. When you switch to reverse or forward drive and press the accelerator, it will automatically disengage the parking brake.

Per the service manual, there is a "Park Lock Actuator" inside the transmission which is electrically energized when the dial is switched to Park. Looks like this:

Ah. So, a second question.... If the car's dead or the software reverts to Windows 3.1*, can it be unlocked so the car can be rolled, say, into a service bay at the repair garage? There has to be an override... you'd think.

*NOOO. I didn't mean it. No no no no. Let it die.

If the car is dead, you can hook up a 12V source to the jumper wires behind the cover in the front bumper to open the frunk. That will allow you access to the LVB to charge or power the car. You can then switch on Emergency Tow (directions are in the owners manual). However, if the software messes up, not sure if there is anything you can do at that point. The service manual does not show any type of manual override.

It's not old technology. Transmission by wire has been around a few decades in modern cars.
