Has anyone had issues with clear coat peeling? Just noticed beneath rear window after hand car wash

This may be related to the known paint-bubbling issue that many and I have.

It’s easiest to search using google. Just type “site:macheforum.com” plus whatever search terms are relevant.

Its cause is poor adhesion consequent to poor preparation techniques employed when painting the car before and in particular prior to application of the clear coat.

Its cause seems distinct from that which might cause bubbling.

It’s also unusual but not unheard of to see such a paint defect on manufacturer’s original paint so is likely that at least that panel has been repainted at some time.

Try eye-lining, viewing obliquely across the surface of the panel using light reflection to examine the texture and appearance of surface of paint on that panel, comparing it with that of other panels around the car and in particular panels furthest from the affected panel should provide a clue.

An electronic paint & coating depth might assist because that will enable a comparison between the depth of paint & other coatings (including body filler) but can only tell you the depth of paint, not when the paint was applied so making a test I describe above by a trained eye necessary.

If observant, my visual test above should inform you whether the paint is or is not Manufacturer’s original.

…….Just noticed, and without wishing to appear sexist, your profile indicates you’re female so, therefore, are more likely to be able to discern even the slightest subtle differences between appearance of original manufacturer’s paint and that of the aftermarket, unlike us men whose bloke-look can’t even find something in a cupboard which is clearly and patently obvious is actually there

Which area of the vehicle is this, Cara? It seems like a bumper maybe? Could you zoom out and post another pic?

This part may have been painted by a supplier. I had an issue with the paint peeling off the two long black parts wedged between the panoramic roof and the quarter panel. Ford changed them right away under warranty.

Looking more closely for clues of aftermarket paint, the surface of the paint seen where light is reflected appears terribly affected by orange-peel effect, see attached annotated screenshot of your picture.

For reference, I just run my depth gauge across the panels on my car that I know for a fact have not yet been repainted and see the manufacturer don’t put much of a depth of paint on the door illustrated, and even less on the roof rails 70mu/metre.
