Mine failed today when it came up and I hit the update button, so I went for a “charge the 12V battery” drive, then went to try to update again and now the Update button is greyed out and if I tap on it, I get the error “Update not ready”. I still fail to understand why the stupid 12V battery isn’t ALWAYS fully charged. Do the idiots who designed the 12V system even know there’s a HUGE battery underneath our cars? ?

To utilize the HVB it requires the BMS and temperature control plumbing to be active. So to keep the LVB topped off, you will get measurable vampire drain. I prefer no vampire drain, just like Ford designed it. For some reason the start ups, Tesla and Rivian included, have not figured out how to stop vampire drain. I guess because they want to use that huge battery!

Edit: maybe Tesla has figured it out, but it has taken years. Literally.

My car was plugged in to the charger all night last night. The stupid 12V battery should have been charged then. This is not difficult. And, really, your claim is that there would be a significant drain if they essentially just “trickle-charged” the 12V battery? Something doesn’t add up there. Remember the hordes with pitchforks and torches are demanding access to the HVB to run their entire homes! That seems like a bit more of a “vampire drain” than ensuring the stupid 12V battery is topped off.

Installed today on the first try. Just finished an hour drive, hit update now. Came back to the car two hours later and success.

I am just saying there is a lot of overhead associated with tapping into the HVB. The overhead is what causes the vampire drain, not charging the LVB itself.

When my car is plugged in, it does maintain the LVB. It is strange yours does not. Plugged in there is no such thing as vampire drain because the car can use EVSE power to keep the LVB topped off.

Your frustration is valid. I am not disagreeing with it, just pointing out why it isn't that easy to keep the LVB fully charged when the car is unplugged. Well, that is if you want to avoid draining the HVB.

No, you got the 21B36 OTA, not this one.

23-PU0314-DCM-LAT is a door latch module update to prevent false alarms.

(DCME, DCMF, DCMG, DCMH updated to - AM)
Awesome, I don't need to go to the dealer to get those updates now.

I had to leave my car on for 6hrs in the garage to get the 4.2.6 update, but this one was so easy. My car sat in the garage for 3 days with a charge of 80% on the main battery, charged overnight to 90%, then I drove it to work (5 miles). Saw the update when I got to work, I figured...hey, why not just try it. I was assuming it would not work, but to my surprise it did. So who the heck knows!

This is one area where the legacy manufacturers have a better mindset owing to building cars that don't have a HVB to top off the 12v system. Nothing stays on after turning the car off unless absolutely necessary.

it installed on my car without a problem today. Regarding the radio, it did not erase all the presets, but set the current station to 540 AM, which is not a preset of mine. It was very noisy, and since I had to get somewhere quickly, I didn't change it right away. Interestingly, it seemed to be picking up a lot of electrical noise from the car, like whines as I increased speed, etc.

Here's how to do that:
Press the start button without stepping on the brake.
Flash the highbeams with the stalk 5 times, and then step on the brake pedal 3 times, and after that check the red battery icon on the instrument panel to see that it flashes like three times. And then shut the ignition off. And then you can turn the car fully on and drive off. Your 12V battery should then fully recharge (if it wasn't doing that before).
Really? I thought you might be joking at first, like…

That is how you get the fastest launch from zero. I have not tried it myself. There is something about a locked rotor pushing against the physical brakes that sounds very bad for the car. I know people do it, but I am reluctant to try it myself.

Now watch - today I will do it.... ?
