Recent Range Increase

Ford announced that the range of the 2023 MME Premium will be 290 miles - an increase of 13 miles from 277 miles in the 2022 model. Based on what I've read this will be achieved by reducing the design buffer in the battery, i.e. you'll have access to 91kw hours, up from 88 kw hours in the 2022 model. (If that is incorrect, please advise). My question: will the 2022 model also get that range increase? Can / will Ford make that happen through an over the air software update; or will it be achieved through a physical modification?

2022 models come from the factory with 91 kWh, and 2021 models with the recall updates also have 91 kWh now.

I am not sure how the range increase from 2022 to 2023 was accomplished.

I think a lot of people believe it’s not a real range increase, rather it’s just a more accurate reflection of the range that 2022s already have. Seems believable to me but no one seems to know for sure.

If that was true one would think that Ford have said that it the increase also applies to MY22, but they haven’t.

That would make sense. That said, the first thing that comes to mind is a, possibly required, EPA re-certification process to make that claim. Maybe that has not happened. Maybe it will. Maybe it won’t.
