Is there a setting available to avoid having to manually select the "recirculate cabin air" each time I drive? I do not enjoy smelling car exhaust or skunks!

No, it auto recirculates as much as possible anyway. The recirculating button just puts in a request that is only gonna last maybe five minutes at the most. The HVAC system is in charge of the recirculation damper, not you.

The best thing to do is make sure you upgrade to a premium cabin filter, which will remove diesel smoke and some smells.

If it's like my Lightning, you have to take it out of "Auto" mode and then hit the recirculation for it to hold.

In my experience you kind of can get this to work but it depends on your settings. Some setting combinations will disable recirculation.

Here's what works for me (assuming this may vary based on software version):
  • recirculation ON (of course! this is what you want on in the first place)
  • heat - don't think it matters
  • defrost OFF (upper vents)
  • middle vents ON (may be able to also enable foot/lower vents, just not defrost)
  • auto OFF
  • AC ON
  • fan ON set to at least 1 (not off)
  • temp - don't think it matters, usually have mine set 70 +/- depending on personal preference
Kind of like this screen grab with recirculation on but with auto off.

I've had these settings stick recirculation on for weeks (maybe even months) at a time without it turning off as long as I don't turn on defrost or auto. You will see your windows start fogging up though in the right circumstances and will have to put on defrost (recirculation will turn off even if you enable it after a minute or two in this scenario). In the winter it's just something I've come to accept (that I'll need to have recirculation off at times).

how often do you change the filter? I've only had my car 3-4 months but done 6000miles already

Should be done once a year or every 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. If you see it's very dirty, then go to every 10,000 miles.
